Tennozu Canalside Projection Mapping × YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition TOKYO to Light Up Tokyo Waterfront for 4 Nights in March 2026

A projection mapping event in collaboration with the "YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition TOKYO – Imagination of Japan" is set to take place at Tennozu Canal East in Shinagawa, Tokyo, from March 20 (Friday) to March 23 (Monday), 2026.

During the four evenings, digital animations inspired by traditional Japanese yokai art will be projected onto buildings along both banks of the Tennozu Canal, the sails of Terada Warehouse's T-LOTUS M vessel, and the surface of the canal itself. The projected content includes animated interpretations of yokai from ukiyo-e woodblock prints such as gashadokuro, as well as imagery from Hyakki Yako (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) picture scrolls, kappa, nurarihyon, and other figures from Japan's rich yokai art tradition.

The show runs from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM each evening. The approximately 6-minute program is projected continuously with approximately 3-minute intermissions between each loop. The event takes place rain or shine, though projections may be paused or canceled in severe weather conditions.

Yokai Greeting Sessions

Alongside the projection mapping, a character greeting session will be held for three evenings from March 20 (Friday) to March 22 (Sunday). Visitors can take photos with the waterside yokai character "Eboshi Kaeru." Greeting sessions run at 6:30 PM, 7:30 PM, and 8:30 PM each evening, with each session lasting approximately 30 minutes.

YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition TOKYO – Imagination of Japan Main Visual

The exhibition is a world-first immersive digital art museum dedicated to Japan's yokai art, bringing to life imagery from works such as Hyakki Yako, Hyakumonogatari, oni, tengu, kappa, and tsukumogami. Using 3D CG, projection mapping, and holographic screens, the exhibition recreates the world of yokai with dynamic movement and three-dimensional sculptural forms. With cooperation from the Iwase Bunko Museum (Japan's first rare book museum, in Nishio City) and the Yokai Art Museum on Shodoshima Island, the exhibition also explores the cultural history linking yokai to contemporary pop culture.
