Overview and History of “Ibusuki Onsen”


“Ibusuki Onsen” is a hot spring area located in “Ibusuki City,” Kagoshima Prefecture, famous especially for its unique “natural sand bath” which is rare even on a global scale. Although the exact opening period of “Ibusuki Onsen” is unclear, it has been used as a sand bath therapy since the Edo period.


This area is also historically significant, known as a hot spring loved by notable figures such as “Saigo Takamori,” a prominent politician and military leader from the late Edo to early Meiji periods, and “Atsuhime,” a celebrated woman from the late Edo to early Meiji periods.


Attractions of “Ibusuki Onsen”


The biggest attraction of “Ibusuki Onsen” is undoubtedly the “natural sand bath.” This unique bathing method involves burying your body in warm sand to induce sweating and detoxify the body. It is said that the effects of the sand bath are three to four times greater than those of a regular hot spring, warming your body from the core. At the sand bath facility “Saraku,” anyone can experience this special treatment.


The hot springs in “Ibusuki Onsen” are primarily sodium chloride springs, known for their high heat retention properties. They are effective for cuts, cold sensitivity, and dry skin, and are especially beneficial for cold sensitivity and fatigue recovery. Various hot spring areas, such as “Surigahama Onsen,” “Yajigayu Onsen,” and “Nigatsuden Onsen,” each have their own unique characteristics.

  • Car: From the “Taniyama IC” on the Kyushu Expressway, follow Route 225 and Route 226 to reach “Ibusuki.”
