Spring Drive Around Kora, Shiga — Saimyoji Temple's Natural Monument Cherry Blossoms and Omi Wagyu Dining

Saimyoji Temple, located in Kora-cho, Shiga Prefecture, is one of the Kotosanzan — three celebrated temples in eastern Shiga — and has been named by CNN as one of "Japan's 31 Most Beautiful Places." The temple and its surrounding area make for a worthwhile destination on a spring drive.

Fudan-zakura and Spring Blooms at Saimyoji Temple

The temple's garden, "Horaien," is home to the "fudan-zakura" — an ever-blooming cherry that is Shiga Prefecture's only designated Natural Monument. It flowers twice a year, in spring and autumn. During spring, the fudan-zakura is accompanied by plum blossoms, azaleas, Heloniopsis orientalis (shoujoubakaama), and rhododendrons that bring vibrant color to the temple grounds.
