Tsubameya, the Beloved Warabi Mochi Shop from Gifu, Makes Its Kansai Debut at Hanshin Umeda Main Store

Tsubameya, the wagashi shop that has drawn long queues at its locations in Gifu, Nagoya, and Tokyo, is heading to Osaka. Starting March 18, 2026, the shop will open a long-term pop-up on the first floor of Hanshin Umeda Main Store — marking its first presence in the Kansai region.

The Signature "Tsubame Warabi"

The star of the lineup is "Tsubame Warabi," the warabi mochi (bracken-starch jelly) that has been made at Tsubameya since the shop's founding. Each piece is hand-cut into a round shape to retain its moisture, then nestled generously in roasted kinako (soybean flour) that fills the box to the brim. Lifting out the warabi mochi from its kinako coating feels almost like a treasure hunt.

The combination of the soft, pillowy warabi mochi and the bittersweet, deeply roasted kinako is what keeps fans coming back. Fresh batches are made daily at the Yanagase flagship in Gifu and shipped to Osaka, so what you get at the counter is as fresh as it gets.

"Earth Sweets" — A Simple, Honest Philosophy

Tsubameya was founded in 2010 in the Yanagase shopping arcade in Gifu City. Its warabi mochi and dorayaki quickly gained a following, and when the Dainagoya Building location opened near Nagoya Station in 2016, daily queues became the norm. A Nihonbashi location in Tokyo followed in 2023.

The shop's ethos centers on what might be called "earth sweets" (大地のお菓子) — confections that celebrate the natural flavor of each ingredient without excess. The recipes are pared back, subtracting rather than adding, resulting in sweets that feel both grounding and gentle.

Alongside the warabi mochi, the Hanshin Umeda pop-up will carry a range of other Tsubameya favorites.

Tsubame Sablé

Tsubame Yokan

The selection includes sablés, yokan (sweet bean jelly), arare (rice crackers), and tsubuan (coarse sweet bean paste), covering everything from everyday snacks to gift-worthy picks.

Hanshin Umeda Main Store Exclusive Packaging

Two products — the Tsubame Warabi and the boxed Tsubame Sablé — will be available in limited-edition packaging created exclusively for the Hanshin Umeda Main Store. The packaging features illustrations of a tiger and a swallow drawn by illustrator Miyuki Matsuo, making them particularly appealing as souvenirs.
