Two new versions of Osaka's beloved "tondcho" are arriving at the Hanshin Umeda Main Store this spring — a cherry blossom edition and an all-new corn kinchaku version.
Background: The Kinchaku Tondcho That Sold 1,400 Units in a Week
"Umaimo Mikkke" on the first floor of Hanshin Umeda Main Store underwent a renovation in October of last year, relaunching as a destination for local gourmet foods from across Japan. One of its standout offerings was tondcho — an Osaka specialty of seasoned sticky rice (okowa) wrapped in bamboo leaf — presented for the first time in a charming drawstring bag (kinchaku). The item drew long daily lines and sold approximately 1,400 units in a single week.
Building on that success, two new variations are now set to appear as part of the "Hanshin Spring Festival."
New Addition 1: Sakura Tondcho (March 18–31)
A cherry blossom version of the classic tondcho makes its debut exclusively at Hanshin Umeda Main Store. The recipe features chewy okowa rice topped with salt-pickled cherry blossoms, then wrapped in a salt-pickled cherry leaf — a seasonal treat that captures the fragrance of spring.

New Addition 2: Kinchaku Tondcho — Corn Version (April 1–7)
Tondcho is an Osaka specialty that can sell as many as approximately 1,000 units in a single day. Its corn version, exclusive to Hanshin Department Store, is now getting its own kinchaku drawstring bag treatment. Each set comes with one corn tondcho inside the pouch.
