About “Misasa Onsen” in Tottori Prefecture
History and Overview of the Onsen
“Misasa Onsen” is a historic hot spring resort that is said to have been discovered during the Heian period.
The spring quality of “Misasa Onsen” is renowned as one of the world’s top radium hot springs, particularly noted for its high radon content. This radon provides a “hormesis effect” by delivering trace amounts of radiation to the body, which stimulates cells, boosts metabolism, and enhances immunity and natural healing abilities. Additionally, inhaling vaporized radon enhances antioxidant functions, making it effective in preventing aging and lifestyle-related diseases. Because of these benefits, “Misasa Onsen” is cherished by many as a “health spa.”
In 2015, it was recognized as a Japan Heritage site along with “Mitokusan Sanbutsuji” as a place for “Rokkon Shojo and Rokkan Chiyu” (purification and healing of the six senses). This recognition highlights the cultural significance of “Misasa Onsen” and the healing effects brought by the hot springs and natural surroundings.
Major Onsen Spots
“Misasa Onsen” boasts numerous attractive hot spring facilities. One notable spot is the “Kawaraburo,” where visitors can enjoy hot springs amidst nature. Located along the “Mitokugawa” river, it offers the pleasure of soaking in hot springs while enjoying the seasonal landscapes. Another popular spot is “Kabuyu,” the oldest hot spring source in “Misasa Onsen,” loved by locals for its historical value.
The area also features a variety of accommodation options. For instance, “Izanro Iwasaki” offers 12 unique large communal baths and open-air baths, popular as a circuit-style large garden bath. “Kiya Ryokan,” a wooden three-story building founded in the Meiji period, is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Additionally, “Saiki Bekkan,” known for its modern Japanese-style ambiance and cuisine, is also worth a visit.
Nearby Tourist Spots and Activities
Around “Misasa Onsen,” there are many tourist attractions, one of which is “Mitokusan Sanbutsuji.” This temple houses the national treasure “Nageiredo,” located in the mountains, offering visitors a mystical experience. The “Misasa Violin Museum” also provides insights into the local culture and history.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy, such as strolling around the hot springs town. Walking through the scenic streets of “Misasa Bridge” and “Koitanibashi” allows you to savor the unique atmosphere of the hot spring area.
Additionally, “Misasa Onsen” offers a drinking hot spring experience, where you can directly consume the radium-rich water believed to be beneficial for health. Combining hot springs with forest bathing is also recommended as a refreshing method.
