This time, we spent a day touring Onomichi, one of Hiroshima’s most popular tourist destinations!
In the morning, enjoy the 360-degree view of Onomichi from the Onomichi Ropeway. On the way back, we ventured down the mountain while exploring on foot.
After filling up on Onomichi’s famous sweets and ramen, rent a bicycle and head for Mukojima.
Local and fantastic cider, and a general store near the beach with a tropical feel.

9:00am Onomichi Station(尾道駅)
This trip starts from Onomichi Station!

From Onomichi Station, it is convenient to travel to Hiroshima Station and to Fukuyama Station. It is often used as a base for exploring Onomichi and is a popular spot for tourists.

This is a nice shopping street with a retro feel, consisting of five streets.
With old stores that have been in business for over 100 years still in existence and chic stores lining the streets, just walking around is a pleasure ✨
Xiao Long Bao Bar Yamatoyu(小籠包酒場 大和湯)
A Chinese restaurant renovated from a former bathhouse.
The freshly made parcels, in which the skin is stretched, wrapped, and steamed upon order, are very popular!
The restaurant has an exterior that retains the atmosphere of a former bathhouse, an open kitchen where you can watch the cooking process as if you were in an Asian food stall, and delicious Chinese food. All elements are full of fun and deliciousness!
Access to the ropeway platform via the shopping street
You can access the Senkouji ropeway by taking the shopping street route.
This is a recommended route because it is a direct route to the ropeway while also enjoying the shopping district.

9:30am Senkoji Ropeway Sanroku Station(千光寺ロープウェイ 山麓駅)
Senkoji Mountain spreads out before your eyes as you purchase your ticket and travel to the boarding area.
From here, you can take the gondola and enjoy the city of Onomichi through the air trip with the guide’s announcement.

Senkoji Ropeway Sanroku Station, located in Nagae, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a ropeway that operates between the Nagae exit and the top of Senkoji Mt. From the ropeway, visitors can enjoy a view of the city of Onomichi. It costs 500 yen for an adult one-way trip.

The ride takes only three minutes, but after enjoying the aerial view, you will arrive at the summit station.
Once again, looking back at the view from the ropeway from the summit station, I was entranced by the spectacular view.
From the summit station, visitors can explore the spots scattered throughout Senkoji Park.
It is recommended to take the ropeway up the mountain on the way there and walk down the mountain on the way back, visiting the spots on the way back.

Senkoji Ropeway Summit Station is located in Higashi-todo-cho, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The ride takes only 3 minutes, and you will arrive at the summit station after enjoying a walk in the air. The train usually departs every 15 minutes and costs 320 yen one way or 500 yen round trip. The last service is at 5:15 pm. Since the climb to Senkoji Park is strenuous, some reviewers suggest taking a walk to Senkoji Temple and using the ropeway on the way back.
Bungaku no Komichi(文学のこみち)
The stones are engraved with passages from poems and novels by poets and writers associated with Onomichi, and a total of 25 stones are scattered along the “Komichi of Literature. Literature in nature. You can feel the power of this place.

Tunnel of megaliths suddenly appears on the pilgrimage route
On the way to Bungaku no Komichi, what looked like a tunnel made of huge stones appeared.
Passing through the gaps between the giant rocks that shine through the trees, we were greeted with a spectacular view. There are many large rocks along the path of literature!

Located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Bungaku no Komichi (Literature Trail) is a 1-kilometer-long promenade dotted with passages from poems and novels by poets and writers associated with Onomichi, inscribed on natural stones. Word of mouth has it that you may find unexpected discoveries if you follow the path without a path, feeling like an explorer. They recommend walking down the mountain from the top of the mountain.
Sanjusan Kannon Dou(三十三観音堂)
お堂の正面にある桜木で造られた「百八煩悩滅除大念珠」は、千光寺名物のひとつで「カチカチ数珠」と呼ばれている。
その名の如く、幸せを念じながらゆっくりと引くとカチカチと音がします。この音で苦しみの根源であろう煩悩を打ち消していただけるようです。

The Sanjusan Kannon Dou located on the grounds of Senkoji Temple is a hall where visitors can worship with the famous Kachi kachi Jyuzu. The beads are made of cherry wood, and when you slowly pull the beads, they make a clicking sound. It is said that this sound will cancel out your worries. Word of mouth suggests that praying with the Kachi kachi Jyuzu is particularly popular.
Daisen-do(大仙堂)
Daisendo, where the smiling Jizo is located.
It is called “Niko Niko Jizo” (smiling Jizo) because of its very calm expression, and is familiar to everyone.
The miniature Jizo statues dedicated in the Daisendo and throughout the temple are called “please Jizo,” and it is said that if you write down your wish and dedicate it, it will be fulfilled. They are more than just a small statue of Jizo.

10:15am Senkoji Temple(千光寺)
Senko-ji Temple is famous for the legend of “Ball rock”. The temple’s symbol, Ball rock, is said to have had a shining ball on its zenith in the past, and the name Senko-ji is said to be derived from this legend.

10:45am Three-storied Pagoda of Tennei-ji Temple(天寧寺三重塔)
Also known as “Kaiun-to,” the sea and sky seen from the three-story pagoda is exceptionally beautiful, and is one of Onomichi’s most representative views.
The three-story pagoda is designated as an important cultural property and stands 25 meters high, giving visitors a tremendous sense of power when they stand in front of it.

11:15am Karasawa(からさわ)
A long-established ice cream shop loved by locals and tourists alike.
The most popular store is is an ice cream monaka with creamy ice cream wrapped in a crispy, crunchy crust.

The minced back fat that floats on the surface of the soup, a characteristic of Onomichi ramen, is medium thin, and is very tasty when intertwined with the slightly flattened noodles.
Although the soup is dark in color, it is refreshing, so I was able to finish the soup!

12:30pm Onomichi Station Lemon Bike(尾道駅レモンバイク)
Rent a lemon-colored “lemon bike,” a bike that looks great against the shimmering sea, the dazzling blue sky, and the greenery of the mountain landscape, at Onomichi Station!
It is a great way to cycle around the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. There is also an electric type available, which is recommended for long-distance travelers.
The electric SHIMANAMI LEMON e-BIKE shown in the photo was rented this time for 4,000 yen per day.
Book in advance through an app called setowa. Present it at the reception desk and enter the code that you will be given on site!

12:45pm Ferry to Mukaishima(向島行渡船のりば)
Located 3 minutes from Onomichi Station, the ferry terminal is just to the left of the Onomichi Ekimae Pier.
There is a ferry service that allows you to ride your bicycle on the ferry. It takes about 5 minutes to reach Mukojima.
Ekimae Tosen(駅前渡船)
A lovely boat that looks somewhat like a dragon’s palace.
Fare 110 yen to be handed over on board
One-way fare 100 yen for adults + 10 yen for bicycles, total 110 yen.
There is no need to purchase tickets in advance. (Just be sure to have some change ready.)

The Ferry to Mukaishima is conveniently located in Higashi Gosho-cho, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, just a 3-minute walk from Onomichi Station and just to the left of the Onomichi Ekimae Pier. This ferry terminal operates a ferry that can be boarded, including bicycles, and takes approximately 5 minutes to reach Mukaishima.
