About This Event

Cycling Shimanami is Japan's largest non-competitive cycling event, held biennially on the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture with Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture. Since its inaugural event in 2014, cyclists from both Japan and abroad have gathered to experience the rare opportunity of riding bicycles on the main expressway lanes, which are normally closed to cyclists. The event's greatest appeal is the panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea's island-dotted landscape and scenic islands as riders cross nine bridges. With diverse course options ranging from approximately 40km to 140km, the event caters to everyone from beginners to advanced cyclists. At each aid station, participants can enjoy local cuisine and warm hospitality, making it a popular "journey on wheels" that combines both cycling and regional culture. The Shimanami Kaido has been designated as a "National Cycle Route" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, ensuring world-class cycling infrastructure.
