Weather
August in Fukuoka is extremely hot, with highs often exceeding 35°C. The humidity is also high, and the days are hot and humid. The sun is especially strong during the daytime, so be careful to avoid heat stroke. Temperatures do not drop much at night, and tropical nights often persist.
Events
August is a great time to enjoy summer evenings with family and friends, as fireworks displays are held throughout Fukuoka. The fireworks festivals are some of the largest in western Japan. Various stalls will be lined up at the venue, so you can enjoy the lively atmosphere of the festival.
Travel
In August, Fukuoka offers a wealth of activities that allow visitors to enjoy nature at sea. With an abundance of beaches, the city is crowded with people enjoying surfing, marine sports, beach volleyball, and other activities. In the city, it is also recommended to enjoy local delicacies such as ramen and motsunabe at Hakata’s yatai (food stalls).
August Fashion
When traveling to Fukuoka in August, fashion for hot and humid weather is a must. Clothes made of light, breathable material, T-shirts, shorts, and sandals are comfortable. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are extremely important to protect you from the strong sun. It is also a good idea to have a folding umbrella in case of sudden thunderstorms. If you are attending an event at night, don’t forget to take insect repellent.

Shiraito Waterfall（白糸の滝）
Shiraito Falls, with a drop of about 24 meters, is a famous sightseeing spot in Itoshima City. The sound of the waterfall flowing and the splash of the water are cool, and many people visit the area during the summer as a summer resort. Around the waterfall, visitors can enjoy playing in the river, fishing for landlocked salmon, and enjoying Nagashi Somen (fine white noodles served flowing in a small flume). This is a popular place for families and a perfect spot for making summer memories.
Senbutsu Limestone Cave（千仏鍾乳洞）
The “Senbutsu Limestone Cave” in Kitakyushu City is a famous summer resort spot. It can be reached in about 20 minutes by car from Ishihara-cho Station. The caves, called “Limestone Cave,” were formed by limestone eroded by groundwater and other factors, and are characterized by cool temperatures all year round. The temperature inside the caves is always kept near 16 degrees Celsius.
Designated as a national natural monument, the Senbutsu Limestone Cave is a very mysterious spot. You can feel a bit like an explorer as you soak your feet in the underground water as you proceed through the caves.
Sengoku Gorge （千石峡）
Sengoku Gorge in Miyawaka City is a cool spot popular among children for playing in the river. There is also a campground and a park, and in summer, the area is crowded with families enjoying barbecues along the river.
The suspension bridge and boardwalk offer a spectacular view of the beautiful scenery of the valley. Visitors can enjoy the changes in nature throughout the year: cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, and autumn leaves in fall. There are also day-trip hot spring facilities nearby, so after a tiring day at the river, it is recommended to take a refreshing dip in the hot spring before returning home.

OISHII KORIYA (delicious ice shop) （おいしい氷屋）
“OISHII KORIYA (delicious ice shop)” in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, was established by an ice-making company in Fukuoka, and shaved ice can be enjoyed all year round. 72 hours of carefully crafted ice is used to make the shaved ice, which has a fluffy texture. The carefully prepared sauce is a perfect match. It is a cool and refreshing treat that is a must-try during the hot summer months.

SUZUKAKE’s Main Store（鈴懸本店）
A long-established Japanese confectionery shop established in 1923, with its main store in Fukuoka. There are several stores in Fukuoka and Tokyo, but only the main store has a tea shop attached to it. The store’s interior has a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for enjoying delicate wagashi.

Summer is in full swing! Fireworks displays in August
Iizuka Noryo Fireworks Festival（飯塚納涼花火大会）
The Iizuka Noryo Fireworks Festival has a long history and is a summer tradition in Iizuka City, attracting about 100,000 visitors every year. It is held of the Onga River, a 10-minute walk from Shin-Iizuka Station. Various stalls line up at the venue, where you can enjoy a variety of festival foods.
Chikugo River Fireworks Festival（筑後川花火大会）
The Chikugo River Fireworks Festival held in Kurume City is a traditional fireworks display with a history of over 350 years. There are several viewing sites, making it one of the largest fireworks displays in western Japan.
Kanmon Kaikyo Fireworks Festival （関門海峡花火大会）
This fireworks festival is held on both banks of the Kanmon Straits in Moji-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka and Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is one of the largest fireworks displays in western Japan, with as many as 15,000 fireworks being shot off against the beautiful night scenery of the Kanmon Straits.
