With a history spanning approximately 1,300 years, “Arima Onsen” is one of Japan’s three oldest hot springs. Its history dates back to the mythological era and is mentioned in classical literature such as the Nihon Shoki and The Pillow Book. It is particularly famous for being beloved by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who played a significant role in reviving the hot spring area after repeated natural disasters. Thanks to his efforts, “Arima Onsen” continues to thrive as a popular hot spring destination.

Numerous landmarks and anecdotes related to Hideyoshi can still be found in “Arima Onsen.” Cultural sites such as “Onsenji Temple” and “Zuihoji Park” are also noteworthy attractions.

There are many ways to enjoy “Arima Onsen.” The hot springs themselves come in two varieties: “Kinsen” and “Ginsen,” each offering unique benefits. “Kinsen” is a ferruginous sodium chloride high-temperature spring that warms the body to its core, helping with fatigue recovery and providing sterilizing effects. On the other hand, “Ginsen” includes both carbonated springs and radon springs, which are excellent for improving skin beauty and promoting blood circulation.

The surrounding area is rich with tourist attractions. At “Arima Toy Museum” and “Arima Stamp Museum,” you can enjoy nostalgic collections of toys and stamps. Natural sightseeing spots such as “Arima Forty-Eight Waterfalls,” “Momijidani,” and “Jigokudani” are also highly recommended. In autumn, you can enjoy beautiful autumn leaves and the natural beauty of each season.

Additionally, you can savor unique local delicacies at “Arima Onsen.” Specialties like “Tansan Senbei” (carbonated rice crackers), “Tansan Manju” (carbonated buns), “Arima Kago” (Arima baskets), and “Ningyo Fude” (doll brushes) are famous. Dishes using local ingredients such as black beans and sansho (Japanese pepper) are also exquisite, so be sure to try them when you visit.

Access

Access to “Arima Onsen” is very convenient. It is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Kobe and about 60 minutes by bus from Osaka.

Furthermore, from Kobe Electric Railway “Arima Onsen Station,” the hot spring town is within walking distance, and there are shuttle buses from various inns and hotels. Due to its excellent accessibility, it is suitable for both overnight stays and day trips.
