A Giant 4-Meter Hotoke Akabane Balloon Makes Its World Premiere at Suma Patio in Kobe for Kobito Zukan's 20th Anniversary

Kobito Zukan, the popular picture book series by Toshitaka Nabata (published by Rokurin-sha) celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026, has created a brand-new giant Hotoke Akabane balloon to mark the milestone. The balloon will make its world premiere at Suma Patio in Kobe, Hyogo, starting May 2, 2026.

Previous Kobito Zukan events have featured a giant Kakuremomojirii balloon as a popular eye-catching photo spot, touring venues across Japan. Hotoke Akabane — second only to Kakuremomojirii in popularity and said to bring happiness to anyone who spots it — was chosen to become a balloon for this special 20th anniversary celebration.

About the Hotoke Akabane Balloon

Measuring approximately 4 meters tall, 5 meters wide, and 3 meters deep, the balloon is around 13 times the size of an actual Hotoke Akabane (roughly 30 cm including the feathers on its head). While spotting a real Hotoke Akabane in the wild is quite difficult, this giant balloon is large enough to be clearly visible from a distance — making it a photo opportunity that even those unfamiliar with Kobito Zukan won't want to miss.

About Kobito Zukan

Kobito Zukan is a picture book series by Toshitaka Nabata, first published in 2006. Now in its 20th anniversary year in 2026, the series has surpassed a cumulative print run of 3.2 million copies and has become a beloved standard in kindergartens, nurseries, and elementary schools across Japan.

The kobito — mysterious creatures that are neither insects nor plants — were first discovered by the main character in the opening book, and 444 species have been introduced to date. Their striking visuals may startle at first glance, but children and families who believe wholeheartedly in their existence have made this series a true classic. Among kids, "kobito hunting" inspired by the books has become a popular pastime.
