New Summer Festival "BON BON BON 2026" Sends Countless Lanterns Into the Night Sky Over Yaizu, Shizuoka

A new summer festival is coming to Kiyomita Park in Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, this August. "BON BON BON 2026" (Bon Matsuri, or "Bonpa") runs for two days, August 22 (Saturday) and 23 (Sunday), 2026, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM each day.

Built around the concept "Reignite the Summer Festival," BON BON BON blends nostalgic and new experiences into one night — bon-odori, DJ sets, festival games, food stalls, and a Lantern Night — for a fresh take on the summer festival, born in Shizuoka.

The event's signature feature is "LANTERN NIGHT." As dusk falls, countless traditional bon lanterns and paper lanterns fill the venue, and the lively daytime atmosphere gives way to a dreamlike world of light. Updating the traditional culture of bon lanterns with a modern touch, the event delivers what organizers call "a night that feels nostalgic, yet new."

As the lively music stage wraps up and the sun begins to set, the mood turns gradually more romantic. The festival's colors shift from a bustling afternoon into the gentle quiet of night.

With wishes carried into the night sky, Lantern Night begins — the special moment that builds toward the day's climax.

Visitors write words of hope, gratitude, or a message to someone dear, then release their feelings onto a lantern. Each lantern carries its own story, one for every person who picks up a brush.

Watch as words written for someone special turn into a warm glow and rise into the summer night sky, one after another — an unforgettable moment to experience for yourself.

It promises to be a night to remember, and makes for a special outing with someone important — perfect for an anniversary, a date, or a summer memory.

MC: K-MIX's Masazumi Takahashi

Guiding this special evening is Masazumi Takahashi, a familiar voice from Shizuoka radio station K-MIX. His narration helps set the mood for the dreamlike moment when the lanterns rise.

BONDANCE — Dance, By Night

Classic bon-odori tunes get a DJ remix. Songs everyone has heard before come alive again with a new rhythm — nostalgic, yet new, and easy for anyone to dance to regardless of generation. Gather around the yagura tower and dance the night away; no need to know the steps beforehand.

MARKET — Eat, Enjoy

Popular shops that usually draw long lines come together from across Japan, with more than 40 stalls centered on trending food and sweets. Goods and workshops round out the lineup — come discover a favorite new stall.

YOKOCHO — Play, Relax

Classic festival games like yo-yo fishing and ring toss, plus kendama performances, a paper-balloon challenge, and a Super Famicom corner bring back the games of the Showa era. Step into a nostalgic play zone that feels like a trip back in time, complete with prizes for those who take on the challenges.

BON PARK Area (Free Admission)

WATER — Get Splashed, Battle

"Songkran Splash" — dive in! A water-gun battle kicks off in the fountain area. Adults and kids alike can get soaked and enjoy summer to the fullest. Water gun rental: ¥300 per 15 minutes; bringing your own is also fine.

LANTERN NIGHT — Light, By Night

Countless lanterns rise into the night sky, filling it with a sea of light. Each glowing lantern, carrying someone's heartfelt wish, lights up the Yaizu night sky. On the final day, the evening closes with an illuminated soap-bubble experience and the finale, "OKURIBI," for an unforgettable send-off.

A separate "Lantern Launch Ticket" is required to release a lantern (up to 4 people per lantern).
