Jinny Street Gallery in Jingumae 2-chome Turns the Whole Neighborhood into a "Playground" with the Participatory Art Project "Jinny Playground"

Jinny Street Gallery, an outdoor art gallery situated in the Jingumae 2-chome shopping district ("Showa-kai") in Shibuya, Tokyo, is hosting the participatory art project "Jinny Playground" from May 30 to July 6, 2026. Domestic and international artists are invited to use streetlight poles scattered throughout the shopping street as extensions of a playground, creating works that encourage passersby to stop, peek, and interact.

The concept behind "Jinny Playground" is that "play is not just for children—it is a mindset." The project aims to generate curiosity, chance encounters, and connections among those who embrace a playful spirit, transforming the everyday act of walking through the city into an open "play" that anyone can participate in.

About Jinny Street Gallery

Jinny Street Gallery is an outdoor art gallery located in the Jingumae 2-chome shopping street ("Showa-kai") in Shibuya. Tucked away on a quiet street slightly removed from the bustle of Omotesando and Harajuku, it makes use of 42 streetlight cases as display spaces, creating small gallery spots scattered throughout the neighborhood.

The gallery is designed so that people strolling by can naturally encounter art as part of their daily lives—a place where the neighborhood scenery and artworks converge.

Turning the Whole Neighborhood into a Playground

Jinny Street Gallery started as a community-led exhibition platform where domestic and international artists could present their work throughout Jingumae 2-chome. By bringing art into public spaces, the gallery blurs the boundary between art and everyday life, creating moments where people encounter art naturally as part of their daily routines.

The project has since evolved beyond a simple exhibition space into an initiative that engages more deeply with the local community. "Jinny Playground" explores new possibilities for how urban shared spaces can be used, experienced, and enjoyed.

The Jingumae 2-chome neighborhood is home to a small park called Senbara Park (Chihara Children's Playground), which is beloved by local families. However, surrounded by fencing, the space can feel limited as a place primarily intended for children. "Jinny Playground" reinterprets this landscape and extends the concept of a "playground" beyond the park itself—reconceiving the entire neighborhood as an open playground accessible to everyone, regardless of age.

Exhibition Content

Participating artists curate each assigned streetlight pole as an "extension of a playground." The works and streetlights incorporate playful interactive elements that spark the curiosity of passersby—encouraging them to stop, peer in, and touch. The artworks exist not only as finished pieces, but as mechanisms through which new experiences emerge through people's participation, making that interaction itself part of the project. Each artist brings their own perspective on "play" and "relationships with the city," creating a variety of expressions within the Jingumae 2-chome landscape.

In addition to interactive artworks, Jinny Street Gallery has also prepared its own experiential streetlight installation. Visitors are invited to view, touch, and experience the art as they walk through the neighborhood.

An art box installation planned during the

City Walk Treasure Hunt Game

To help visitors enjoy the exhibition while exploring the shopping street, a city walk-style treasure hunt game will run throughout the exhibition period. Participants can wander the streets around the gallery, experience the artworks, and enjoy discovering various things along the way.

Those interested in participating in the treasure hunt game can register their contact information via the sign-up form on the gallery's website to receive details at a later date.
