At Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden, a colony of approximately 1,000 Nikko daylilies (family Asphodelaceae) is currently in peak bloom, bringing bright summer colors to the mountain landscape.
The subalpine-type colony just in front of the garden's western entrance blooms early by local standards and is expected to remain at its best through late June. Meanwhile, the highland-type colony of 2,000 plants in the wetland zone at the center of the garden is anticipated to begin flowering from around late June.
About the Nikko Daylily (Family Asphodelaceae)
The Nikko daylily is a perennial herb that grows in moist subalpine meadows across Hokkaido and central Honshu and northward. As natural stands are not found in the Kansai region or westward, seeing a large colony in bloom here is a rare experience. Colonies at Oze and Kirigamine are particularly well known, and plants typically grow 40–70 cm tall. Each individual flower is a one-day bloom — opening in the morning and closing by evening — but a single stem carries many buds that open one after another, allowing an extended period of enjoyment overall.
Special Event: "Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden × Koyomi Life · Hana Biyori"
The garden is hosting a seasonal exhibition pairing the traditional 72-season almanac with floral colors, along with a flower-collecting stamp rally. Visitors can experience alpine flowers from the Alps, the Himalayas, and the Japanese highlands while savoring each moment of the changing seasons.
