Immersive Ancient Egypt Exhibition at Yokohama Minato Mirai PLOT48

The "MYSTERY OF TUTANKHAMEN – Immersive Ancient Egypt Exhibition –" is currently on display. It is an exhibition that lets visitors experience the world of ancient Egypt in an immersive space that goes beyond a conventional art museum or natural history museum.

More than a century has passed since archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Research and excavation of ancient Egyptian civilization continues to this day, and new discoveries keep emerging. Supervised by Egyptologist Yukinori Kawae, the exhibition explores the mysteries of Tutankhamun, one of the world's most famous kings. Akhenaten and his family, who forcibly carried out a religious reform from polytheism to monotheism, were erased from history for a long time. As a result, Akhenaten's son, King Tutankhamun, remains surrounded by many mysteries even today.

Using both analog and digital elements, the exhibition features more than 130 super replicas (only three sets exist in the world), a fully reconstructed Tomb of Tutankhamun, immersive projection, and CG based on 3D scans of the actual golden mask and throne. Visitors can imagine Tutankhamun's short life and travel back to Egypt 3,000 years ago.

MYSTERY OF TUTANKHAMEN exhibition

What Is an "Immersive Exhibition"?

The golden mask and golden coffin discovered in the Tomb of Tutankhamun more than 100 years ago are now treasures that never leave Egypt. To see the originals, one has to fly to Egypt. This exhibition has therefore prepared many features that let visitors travel to Egypt, to Luxor, to ancient times, and in front of golden relics, all without leaving Japan.

1. Data Captured from Real Tutankhamun Artifacts

WORLD SCAN PROJECT traveled to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and photographed many of Tutankhamun's artifacts for photogrammetry, converting them into 3D models. At the venue entrance, a hologram lets visitors view the golden mask as if they were explorers. The fine textures of this "3D digital clone," scanned directly from the originals, are worth a close look.

2. A Fully Reconstructed Burial Chamber

The burial chamber of the Tomb of Tutankhamun, KV62 (meaning "Tomb No. 62 in the Valley of the Kings"), discovered in Luxor, has been realistically recreated through the craftsmanship of Japanese film art artisans. It is the same installation that was shown at Kadokawa Musashino Museum, where supervisor Kawae remarked, "Wow, this is just like the real thing!" and it has been relocated to Yokohama as is. The atmosphere, scale, wall paintings and grave goods, and even the traces of mold, are faithfully reproduced as they would be seen in Luxor.

3. "Super Replicas" Made to Be as Close to the Originals as Possible

More than 130 life-sized replicas are on display. Unlike in a typical museum, visitors can look at them up close rather than through glass and examine the details. These 3,300-year-old treasures were recreated by professional metalworkers, sculptors and others led by Professor Mustafa Mahmoud El-Ezabi of the Sculpture Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, Minia University, Egypt. Only three sets of these replicas exist in the world, and the exhibition displays the newest and most precise set.

4. Music and Visuals

A variety of content adds to the immersive experience, including a theater with commentary videos by supervisor Kawae, immersive projection visuals conveying the life of Tutankhamun, and an original theme score composed for the exhibition.
