Shibuya Blue Cave Illumination(Ao no Dokutsu SHIBUYA)- Japan's Largest Blue Illumination
About This Event
Shibuya Blue Cave Illumination is Japan's largest blue illumination event, held annually in the heart of Shibuya during winter. This magical pathway of light stretches approximately 800 meters from Koen-dori to the zelkova tree-lined avenue of Yoyogi Park, just minutes from JR Shibuya Station, creating one of Tokyo's most beloved winter traditions.
The event began in 2014 along the Meguro River as "Nakameguro Blue Cave Illumination(Nakameguro Ao no Dokutsu)." In 2016, it moved to Shibuya and became "Shibuya Blue Cave Illumination," continuing to evolve annually while attracting over 15 million visitors cumulatively. The event's name draws inspiration from the mystical "Blue Grotto" (Grotta Azzurra) on Italy's Capri Island, and true to its name, it recreates an enchanting blue-lit fantasy world in the middle of the city.
The centerpiece feature is the stunning display of approximately 600,000 to 770,000 LED lights that completely envelop the zelkova trees, creating an experience akin to walking through a blue ocean. The unified blue lighting transforms Shibuya's bustling daytime streets into an otherworldly destination. Each year brings new themes and innovative presentations, including music-synchronized light shows, combinations with snow-white lighting effects, and interactive experiential elements that continuously provide fresh surprises and emotions.
Excellent accessibility is one of Shibuya Blue Cave Illumination's major attractions. Located within walking distance of Shibuya Station, which serves JR Yamanote Line, Tokyu lines, and various subway lines, and also accessible from Harajuku and Yoyogi-Koen stations, visitors can easily incorporate it into their Tokyo sightseeing itinerary. The event is free of charge and typically illuminated daily from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, making it convenient to visit before or after shopping and dining.
Shibuya Blue Cave Illumination has become beloved through social media photo sharing and serves as a special memory-making destination for tourists from both domestic and international locations. The blue lights shining under Tokyo's cold December night sky promise an unforgettable experience that will be deeply etched in visitors' hearts.
