Hiroshima 2 Day Itinerary: Day 2 of enjoying local gourmet food and art while walking around Onomichi

Summary

This two-day and one-night trip will take visitors to Onomichi, a city facing the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture, and Ikuchijima Island in the Seto Inland Sea.
On the second day, we walked and explored the Onomichi area.

Travel Itinerary

8:00am HOTEL BEACON ONOMICHI(ホテルビーコンおのみち)

The second day started with breakfast at the hotel where we were staying!

HOTEL BEACON ONOMICHI is an accommodation facility located in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. A total of six types of concept rooms meet diverse needs. In addition, the hotel is located on the second floor of JR Onomichi Station Station, offering excellent accessibility. In addition, there is a deck on the second floor from which you can view the harbor and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

11:00am Oyatsu-to-Yamaneko (おやつとやまねこ)

The first spot is a short walk away!
We’ve come to a super cute store that is famous for its pudding.
Not only does it look good, it tastes authentic.

Oyatsu to Yamaneko is a pudding and baked goods store located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Scones, biscuits, cookies, and other items are sold in the store, but the most popular item, Onomichi pudding, was introduced in the TV program “Matsuko no Shiranai Sekai” and has been widely featured on SNS and in magazines. It features a retro red illustration in a milk bottle and comes with a secret sauce, which is the key to its delicious taste.

12:30pm Mt. Senkoji Ropeway(千光寺山ロープウェイ)

This is the place to go when you come to Onomichi!
The view from the ropeway never gets old no matter where you look.
You can watch the town of Onomichi getting smaller and smaller, or you can enjoy the thrill of seeing the trees right below you ✨.

If you go on foot, the slope is quite steep, but if you take the ropeway, you can get there in a matter of 3 minutes!

The Mt. Senkoji Ropeway, located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, operates between the foot of Senkoji Mountain and its summit. The ropeway is open from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm, and departs from two stations every 15 minutes. The fare for adults is 500 yen one-way, 700 yen round-trip, and 250 yen one-way, 350 yen round-trip for children.

12:40pm Senkoji Park summit observatory(千光寺頂上展望台 PEAK)

We took the ropeway to the top of the mountain.
This observatory features a spiral staircase.
Thanks to the long observation deck, you can enjoy the view to the fullest!

A bridge leading to the Shimanami Sea Route can be seen in the back! It feels nice and open.

Senkoji Park summit observatory is a 63-meter-long observation deck located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The view from the top is spectacular, offering a panoramic view of the city of Onomichi and the Onomichi Waterway. It is also a night view spot where visitors can admire the night scenery of the Onomichi waterway area, and is open for admission 24 hours a day. As the observatory is free of charge, it is a spot where visitors can stop by casually.

1:00pm Senkoji Temple(千光寺)

Senko-ji Temple is another sightseeing spot that you should not miss when sightseeing in Onomichi ✨
The site is not that large, so it is easy to walk around!
It is high up and has a nice view.

How to enjoy

It is fun to look at the various kinds of Jizo and get omikujiji and good luck charms!

Senkouji Temple is located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is a popular tourist attraction. Located at an elevation of 140 meters above sea level, it commands a panoramic view of the entire city of Onomichi. It is also famous for the legend of Jade Rock and hosts events such as the Furin Festival and the Akari Festival.

1:30pm Cat Trail(猫の細道)

Cat Trail is a narrow alley of about 200 meters that runs from the east side of Ushitora Shrine to the three-story pagoda of Tennei-ji Temple.
There are so many mysterious cat illustrations and figurines that it looks like the world of Ghibli!

Cat Trail is a narrow 200-meter alley in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This spot is lined with cat motif figurines, illustrations, and general merchandise stores, where visitors can enjoy a quiet moment while walking along the path.

1:40pm Manekineko (lucky cat) Museums in Onomichi(招き猫美術館in尾道)

The building gives off a unique atmosphere on the Cat Trail path.
There are quite a few Manekineko to admire!

A Manekineko shrine?

Even though they are the same Manekineko, each one has a different expression or standing, making it worth a visit for cat lovers.

The “Manekineko Museum in Onomichi” in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is an art museum with a collection of about 3,000 Manekineko from all over Japan. The museum, renovated from a Taisho era private house, has a store on the first floor and a gallery on the second floor.

2:30pm Imagawa Gyokukoen Tea Shop(今川玉香園茶舗)

After enjoying many things in Senkoji Park, we went to a Japanese tea store with a long history in Onomichi.
A wonderful old-fashioned tea shop with a fragrant aroma from the moment you walk in front of the store.
They roast tea leaves right across from the store.

Imagawa Gyokukoen Tea Shop, located in Kubo, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a specialty tea store. It is a traditional tea shop, and as you walk down the street, you can’t help but notice the fragrant aroma wafting through the air. You can even watch the tea leaves being roasted across from the store.

3:00pm Onomichi Oobanyaki Sakura(尾道大判焼き さくら)

A large pancake shop run by a friendly old man ✨
I’m hungry and it’s time for a snack!

They bake oobanyaki right in front of you! It’s nice to be able to eat them freshly made.

The dough is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, filled with custard cream! Excellent eating experience.

Onomichi Oobanyaki Sakura, located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, specializes in oobanyaki takeout. The signature item on the menu is the “Croissant Oobanyaki” made with Danish dough. You can also order them by order.

3:30pm sora studio&gallery

I came to a gallery where I could easily experience ceramic art!
There were lots of cat figurines in the store.

I made a reservation for the “Soraneko (store character) making experience” and tried it for the first time.

The instructor was very attentive to beginners, so I was able to enjoy making it all the way through to the end. The finished product will be ready in one month!

sora studio&gallery, located in Tsuchido, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a place where visitors can try their hand at making ceramics. Visitors can try their hand at pottery making on an electric potter’s wheel and purchase pottery works in the store. It is a great spot to make memories of your trip.

5:00pm Onomichi Ramen Kuukai(尾道ラーメン 喰海)

Onomichi is famous for its ramen. It is the perfect way to end your trip!
No trip is complete without eating this.
It was cloudy on this day, but you can enjoy the view on a clear day!

Ramen noodles are made with chicken and seafood broth!
Floating back fat is a characteristic of Onomichi ramen, but the fat is not too heavy, making it easy for even women to eat.
