Must-See Spots

Aichi Prefecture has many spots where you can enjoy the beauty of winter. Here are some places where you can relish the unique landscapes and activities of this season.

“Chausuyama Kogen” Ski Resort

“Chausuyama Kogen”

Situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters, “Chausuyama Kogen” becomes the only ski resort in Aichi Prefecture during winter. It offers a sledding slope and a snow play area where beginners and families with children can enjoy safely. The expansive area covered in snow allows you to experience the beauty of nature up close.

“Irago Cape Lighthouse”

“Irago Cape Lighthouse” is located at the tip of the Atsumi Peninsula, offering a rare sight of the sunrise through the stone gate cave in mid-February. From this point, you can overlook the Pacific Ocean, Ise Bay, and Mikawa Bay. The crisp air of a cold morning enhances the beauty of the scenery. The surrounding area is filled with romantic spots, making it ideal for couples.

“Korankei”

“Korankei” is known as a famous spot for autumn leaves, but its winter tranquility is also captivating. In February, the area is covered in snow, creating a winter wonderland. You can enjoy walking the trails while taking in the beautiful winter scenery. Exploring the town and its historic buildings also adds richness to your travel memories.

February-Only Events and Festivals

In February, Aichi Prefecture hosts numerous traditional festivals and seasonal events. Here are some events where you can enjoy the local history and culture.

“Irago Nanohana Festival”

“Nanohana Festival”

Held from late February to March, the “Irago Nanohana Festival” colors the entire Atsumi Peninsula with yellow nanohana (rapeseed flowers). Especially at the “Irago Nanohana Garden,” the vast fields of blooming nanohana are a sight to behold and a perfect spot for photography. Various events are held during the festival, allowing you to enjoy local gourmet food and specialties.

“Setsubun-e” (Toyohashi Oni Festival)

The “Toyohashi Oni Festival,” held on the second Saturday and Sunday of February, is a unique and famous festival. The highlight is the “Karakai” ritual, where a red demon challenges a tengu (a mythical creature) in a humorous exchange. Participating in this festival is believed to ward off evil and pray for health. There is also a tradition that eating “Tankiri Ame” candy prevents summer colds.

“Souri Pond Ume Festival”

Held from February to March, the “Souri Pond Ume Festival” is the top plum blossom spot in Aichi Prefecture. About 6,000 plum trees bloom beautifully, filling the park with a sweet fragrance. During the festival, stage events, morning markets, and illuminated plum groves attract many visitors. Enjoy the beautiful plum blossoms while feeling the arrival of spring.

Winter-Exclusive Gourmet

Aichi Prefecture’s winter delicacies focus on warm dishes made with local ingredients. Here are some delicious gourmet foods perfect for the cold season.

Nagoya Cochin Nabe image

“Nagoya Cochin Nabe” (Hot Pot)

“Nagoya Cochin Nabe” is a luxurious hot pot dish using Aichi Prefecture’s prized local chicken “Nagoya Cochin.” You can fully enjoy the rich flavor from the tender meat. Especially, the miso-based hot pot perfectly matches the flavor of the Cochin with the richness of miso. For a simpler taste, “Mizutaki” (plain hot pot) is also recommended.

“Rakunabe”

“Rakunabe” is a traditional miso hot pot offered by the long-established restaurant “Koraku” in Nagoya. Various parts of the chicken, such as thigh, breast, and wings, are simmered in a soup made with “Hatcho Miso.” The staff serves the dish at the optimal time to ensure you enjoy it at its best. Adding “Kishimen” noodles at the end makes for a delightful finish.

“Botan Nabe”

“Botan Nabe,” enjoyed in the Okumikawa region of Aichi, is a miso-based hot pot made with wild boar meat. The unique sweetness and chewiness of the boar meat are complemented by a broth blending “Hatcho Miso” and “Saikyo Miso.” This dish, embodying the bounty of the mountains, is perfect for warming up during the winter cold.
