Akafuku's Cool Summer Mizu Yokan Arrives at Kumamoto's Tsuruya Department Store

A cool, refreshing take on Akafuku's signature red bean paste is coming to Kumamoto.

From Wednesday, August 12 to Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the Central Event Space on the basement first floor of Tsuruya Department Store's main building will host a period-limited sale of "Akafuku Mizu Yokan," a seasonal treat from Mie Prefecture's Akafuku. Alongside it, sweets from Akafuku's Japanese-Western confectionery brand Isuzu Chaya — "Mochi Dorayaki" and the seasonal "Toki no Yokan Suika" — will also be available.

"Akafuku Mizu Yokan" lets shoppers enjoy the flavor of Akafuku's red bean paste in a cool, refreshing form suited to summer. Sales end each day once the planned quantity sells out.

Smooth koshian made from Hokkaido-grown azuki beans is set into a lightly sweet, moist mizu yokan and poured into a folded box (orihako) as a single sheet, so it can be cut into pieces of whatever size is preferred.

The mizu yokan is sold frozen, so it can be thawed at home whenever it's wanted. Its smooth texture and light, clean sweetness make it a good match for tea during the last of the summer heat, as a seasonal gift, or as a souvenir to bring when visiting family.

Sweets from Isuzu Chaya round out the lineup: the soft "Mochi Dorayaki," made with mochi and red bean paste, and the seasonal "Toki no Yokan Suika," a yokan finished with a watermelon design that reflects the season.

Note: Akafuku Mochi itself is not sold at this event. Quantities are limited, and sales may end once stock runs out. Start times and product availability may change due to weather or traffic conditions.
