The Atami Kaijo Hanabi Taikai has been held since 1952. The festival traces its origins to a series of disasters that struck the area: a typhoon in 1949 that swept away over 140 homes along the coast, followed by a major fire near Atami Station in 1950, and another large fire ten days later that destroyed nearly 1,000 structures in the city center. The fireworks display was first held in 1952 as part of the city's recovery effort, and the tradition has continued ever since. The event now takes place throughout the year, making the fireworks a defining feature of Atami.
A Venue Praised for Its Exceptional Acoustics

Two elements set the Atami Kaijo Hanabi Taikai apart: the finale known as the "Daikuchu Niagara" and the launch venue itself.
The "Daikuchu Niagara" is not a traditional set piece, but rather a star mine launched simultaneously from positions across the entire venue, filling the night sky with silver bursts bright enough to light up the surroundings like daytime. The effect has been described by spectators as so visually striking it is difficult to look away.
Atami Bay is also highly regarded among fireworks specialists as one of Japan's premier launch sites. The surrounding mountains on three sides create a natural bowl shape, causing the sound of the fireworks to echo dramatically across the water — producing an acoustic effect comparable to a large stadium. For those watching from the waterfront park or close to the water's edge, the concussive sound of larger bursts and the "Daikuchu Niagara" finale can be felt physically. The fireworks at Atami are as much a sensory experience as a visual one.

Shiosai: Atami's Closest Private Outdoor Bath to the Sea

Situated on the ocean side of the national highway — an unusually rare location in Atami — the ryokan's private outdoor bath "Shiosai" (潮彩) features an infinity-style design with the sea directly below the tub. The combination of the Izu Peninsula landscape and the bathwater creates a striking visual contrast, and the bath has been widely shared on social media. The sensation of the sea directly underfoot gives the impression that the bath and the ocean are part of the same space.
