About the Film: Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island

Chiikawa's first-ever movie adaptation began as a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) by illustrator Nagano. Since the series began, it has rapidly grown in popularity, spawning numerous merchandise lines and collaborations and spreading throughout Japan. Its popularity shows no signs of slowing, having won the "Japan Character Awards Grand Prix" four times, with the short anime series that began airing in 2022 surpassing 400 million catch-up views on YouTube — making it a beloved franchise not just in Japan, but around the world.

The film adapts what's known as the "Siren Arc," a long-running storyline that repeatedly trended on social media with each new installment, and one of the series' most popular episodes. Production is by SAIPIKU, known for its high-quality animation, including the striking action sequences in 劇場版『ウマ娘 プリティーダービー 新時代の扉』. Under Nagano's full supervision, the adventures of Chiikawa and friends are brought to life with sweeping music and powerful visuals.

Story: One day, while Chiikawa and Hachiware are relaxing in the plaza, a rabbit-like character suddenly appears with a flyer stuck to its face. When Hachiware checks the flyer, it turns out to be an invitation reading "You're invited to a special island." Lured in by phrases like "Take on an easy subjugation quest for 100 times the reward" and "Limited island ramen and limited sweets, sweet and spicy, all virtually free," Chiikawa and friends decide to go on a training camp to the island. Together with a suspicious otter who doubts the flyer's claims, they board a ship and land on the island — but what awaits them there?
