A high-resolution remaster of 70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X, the 1999 PlayStation shooting game celebrated for decades as a legendary cult classic, is scheduled to launch on July 16, 2026. The title will be available on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store, and Steam.
A Legend Returns
Released exclusively in Japan in the late 1990s, the original game arrived on four CD-ROMs and featured an extraordinary 8,000 hand-drawn animation cels — a production scale so ambitious it remained the subject of fascination among fans long after its release. The title combined a deep affection for the golden age of robot anime with an exuberant parody spirit and an uncompromising level of commitment.
The remaster brings all of that passion back using modern technology.
Gameplay: Playing Through a TV Robot Anime Broadcast
The game is structured to replicate the experience of watching — and controlling — an actual television robot anime broadcast. Players progress through a time signal, opening credits, main story, eyecatch bumpers, commercials, ending credits, and a next-episode preview, all within the game itself.
Three young pilots board the combined robot Geppy-X to battle the Space Demon Empire. Midway through the story, the mech evolves into the new model Geppy-XX.

8,000 Frames of Animation, Restored
The original PlayStation version ran at 320×240 pixels and 15fps. For the remaster, the team returned to the original Betacam tapes, re-digitized the footage, applied super-resolution processing to sharpen the image, and restored the animation to its intended 24 frames per second.

Triple-Form Transformation Side-Scrolling Shooter
The core gameplay is an arcade-style horizontal scrolling shooter. Geppy-X can transform between three forms:
- X-1 (Balanced Type) — An all-purpose unit capable of handling any situation.
- X-2 (Speed Type) — High-speed maneuverability paired with the X-Seeker charge attack that sweeps the screen clean.
- X-3 (Power Type) — Close-range finishing move "X Slap" and the screen-clearing "X Cannon."

Midway through the game, the mech further evolves into Geppy-XX.

Modern Convenience Features
The remaster preserves the challenge of the original game while adding quality-of-life features for modern play environments:
- Rewind function
- Rapid-fire support
- Quick save
- Scanline reproduction (CRT mode)

Voice Cast and Music
The game retains the original 1999 voice recordings featuring Akira Kamiya, Sho Hayami, Shuichi Ikeda, Ichiro Nagai, Goro Naya, and others. Theme and insert songs are performed by anime music legends Isao Sasaki, Akira Kushida, and Hironobu Kageyama — all presented alongside the high-resolution visuals.
Extra Mode After the Main Campaign
Clearing the main story unlocks six additional modes, including a movie-setting boss rush, an alternate "if" story, an alternate-world arranged mode, and experimental presentation stages.
