Hakata Summer Festival 2026, Presented by 地球人.jp, Returns to JR Hakata Station Plaza for Its 8th Year

Summer is here, and the Hakata Summer Festival returns once again to liven up the streets of Hakata. The event is organized by the Hakata Summer Festival Executive Committee, with its secretariat handled by Saeki Japan Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Kiyokawa, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City; President: Takahiro Saeki).

The summer festivals of childhood, when heading out in a yukata felt like an adventure in itself, remain etched in many people's memories. With festival music playing in the background, adults and children alike joining hands in a circle for Bon dance is a scene that has come to symbolize summer in Japan.

As people grow older, though, opportunities to experience that kind of summer festival tend to fade, becoming little more than a nostalgic memory. In Hakata, once the Yamakasa festival ends, summer can start to feel a little quieter. The Hakata Summer Festival was created to bring back that old-fashioned summer festival scene, one that people of all generations can enjoy together, right in the heart of the city during that lull.

Now in its 8th year, the festival features Bon dancing around a tower erected in the JR Hakata Station Plaza, carnival games popular with children such as super-ball scooping, and festival food stalls, offering something for visitors of every generation.

The Hakata Summer Festival brings a colorful close to summer in Hakata. This year, too, visitors can gather around the large tower at the heart of the venue to dance together and create smiling summer memories.

"Uchimizu" Water-Sprinkling Ceremony on August 4

Following the old Japanese custom of sprinkling water in gardens and alleyways at dusk to cool the air, the festival's traditional "uchimizu" ceremony returns as part of the opening celebrations.

As a chance to experience Japanese culture firsthand, foreign residents of Fukuoka are invited as guests to join visitors in sprinkling water together. The ceremony offers a moment to ease the summer heat while feeling the distinctly Japanese sense of atmosphere and hospitality.

Scheduled to take place around 6:00 PM in front of the tower at the venue.

An Approximately 8-Meter "Lantern Tower" Returns as the Venue's Centerpiece

The approximately 8-meter-tall "lantern tower" that debuted last year and captivated many visitors returns once again as the symbol of the festival. Its lanterns cast a dreamlike glow against the night sky, setting the mood for the summer festival and lending color to the venue.

Lantern Tower Overview

  • Height: approximately 8 meters
  • Width: approximately 3 meters
  • Tiers: 10 tiers (4 sides)
  • Number of lanterns: 217 total (55 lanterns per side x 4 sides)

*The tower may be taken down early in the event of severe weather.

Bon Dancing Every Night — Enjoy a Hakata Summer Together

Bon dancing, the festival's main attraction, takes place every night once again this year. The group Nowa Daiko provides the music, from familiar standards like "Tanko Bushi" to modern, pop-influenced Bon dance tunes, making it easy for anyone, of any generation, to join in.

Gathering around the tower and feeling the venue come together as one is something unique to the Hakata Summer Festival. Come dance alongside both adults and children and make the most of a summer night in Hakata.

The Best Part of Summer Festivals — Food Stalls and Carnival Games Galore

Food stalls are, of course, one of the great pleasures of any summer festival. The venue is lined with stalls selling shaved ice and a wide variety of food, alcohol, and soft drinks.

There are also plenty of carnival games for all ages to enjoy, including yo-yo fishing, super-ball scooping, and shooting galleries. Come enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere of an old-fashioned summer festival with family and friends.

This year brings even more to look forward to, with several new stalls joining the lineup. Here's a look at some of the notable newcomers making their debut this year.

A Hakata Classic: Guru-Guru Chicken Skin

"Guru-guru chicken skin" — chicken skin wound around a skewer and deep-fried — a long-loved Hakata specialty, comes to the Hakata Summer Festival. Each skewer is fried individually to a crisp, savory exterior with a chewy, juicy inside. The richer the bite, the more the flavor comes through, making it a great match for a drink. Enjoy this distinctly Hakata flavor alongside the festival atmosphere.

Irresistibly Gooey Cheese: Cheese Hot Dogs

"Cheese hot dogs," a staple of Korean street food, also make an appearance. Crisp and golden on the outside, with plenty of gooey, stretchy cheese inside, they offer a chewy, freshly-cooked texture and rich cheese flavor that's perfect for eating while strolling the festival. Enjoy this popular treat that appeals to both children and adults.

A New Twist on a Classic: Succulent Plant Scooping

In place of the classic carnival game of super-ball scooping, "succulent plant scooping" offers a fresh take on the format, letting visitors use a poi net to scoop up plump, cute succulent plants. Any succulents scooped up can be taken straight home, adding the extra fun of growing them afterward. It's a carnival game that both children and adults can get absorbed in, and one of this summer's highlights.
