Hotel Granvia Kyoto will host "Manabunka in Kyoto Station Building," a hands-on workshop event where visitors can experience traditional crafts. The event takes place on March 20, 2026 (Friday, national holiday), the Spring Equinox designated by Kyoto City as "Traditional Industry Day." The event is jointly organized by West Japan Railway Company, Kyoto Station Building Development Co., Ltd., and Hotel Granvia Kyoto.
The event features 19 workshop booths offering traditional craft experiences including Kyo-Yuzen (Kyoto-style hand-painted silk dyeing) and Kyo-Shippo (Kyoto cloisonné).
Visitors can create accessories such as hair ornaments and earrings using colorful mizuhiki (decorative Japanese cord), or make "Oshi-tatami" by freely combining multicolored tatami mats to display favorite mascots or characters. Many workshops are designed for easy participation by children. Other experiences include painting wooden plates carved with Kyo-Yuzen patterns in favorite colors, and trying hand-painted Yuzen color application.
This event offers a rare opportunity to experience traditional crafts up close. Visitors are encouraged to bring family and friends to experience the appeal of traditional craftsmanship. (Free admission, workshops from ¥1,000, duration 20 minutes and up)
The venue will also feature a special learning corner "The Secrets of 'Odashi' (Dashi Stock)," where participants can learn how dashi, an essential element of Japanese cuisine, is made. The experience includes touching kombu (kelp) and comparing taste variations at different stages.
