A new type of billiards experience has arrived at Dining Darts Bar Bee Shibuya in Tokyo. From April 16, 2026, the venue now features Maspool — a distinctively square billiards table that's been drawing attention at amusement bars around Japan.
What Is Maspool?
Maspool is an unusual variation on the traditional billiards table. Instead of the standard rectangular (9-foot) competition format, it uses four short cushion rails arranged together to form a perfect square. The name combines "masu" (枡), the Japanese word for a square-shaped vessel, the English word "mass" (as in a gathering of people), and "pool," referring to pocket billiards. The table was developed by Yasuhiro Komori, CEO of GLOBAL GROVE Co., Ltd., and the name was coined by professional billiards player Hayato Hijikata.
Great for Beginners and Groups
Easy to get into from the first shot
Because of the square shape, the distance between balls is shorter than on a standard table, removing the need for long, difficult shots. Players new to billiards will find it much easier to pocket balls, making the game feel rewarding right away.
Naturally brings players together
The compact square format means players naturally gather around all four sides of the table. With drinks in hand, it lends itself well to lively conversation and a fun group atmosphere.
Simplified rules for easy entry
For those who find the break shot tricky, staff introduce a simplified version of 8-ball where the balls are placed on spots on the table from the start, so anyone can jump in without feeling intimidated.
