70-Year-Old Meat Wholesaler Rises from the Ashes with New Fried Food Shop "Agiya Orosha Shibata" in Osaka's Shinsekai

A specialty fried food shop called "Agiya Orosha Shibata" (揚屋 おろしやシバタ) is set to open in Osaka's Shinsekai district on Friday, July 3, 2026. The shop is born from the rebirth of "Orosha Shibata," a meat wholesaler with roughly 70 years of history in the area.

70 Years of History, Then a Fire

"Orosha Shibata" spent about 70 years as a meat wholesaler in Shinsekai, supporting local restaurants and the community with its expertise in beef sourcing, purchasing, and processing. The shop's skills in the meat trade were honed and passed down unchanged since its founding.

In January 2026, however, a fire completely destroyed the premises, bringing operations to a halt. The accumulated history of seven decades felt lost in an instant.

Yet encouragement poured in from the community, regular customers, and supporters from around the country — messages urging the shop to try again in Shinsekai and to come back. Support through crowdfunding also gave the team the resolve to take a new step forward.

A New Format: "Agiya Orosha Shibata"

Rather than simply rebuilding what was lost, the team decided to take on a new business concept with the goal of making Shinsekai even more lively. The result is "Agiya Orosha Shibata," a specialty shop dedicated to authentic fried food — something only a meat wholesaler with direct sourcing relationships could offer.

The shop's three flagship items are:

  • Shinsekai Croquette (新世界コロッケ)
  • French Fries (フライドポテト)
  • Meat Stick (肉棒 / にくぼう)

The overarching vision is to make "Shinsekai Croquette" a new Osaka specialty, joining the ranks of iconic foods like takoyaki, kushikatsu, and okonomiyaki.

The Shinsekai Croquette — Made by a Meat Wholesaler

The defining characteristic of the Shinsekai Croquette is a pronounced meat presence unlike ordinary croquettes. Around 30% of the filling is a ground meat blend, with potato serving as a complement to enhance the flavor of the meat. Each piece weighs 120g and is priced at ¥300 (tax included).

The frying oil is wagyu (Japanese beef) tallow, drawing out the natural sweetness, richness, and aroma of wagyu fat to create a croquette that is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. This is a product only achievable by a meat wholesaler with direct access to quality beef.

French Fries with 12 Japanese-Inspired Flavors

The French fries come in S, M, and L sizes, and in 12 flavor options designed to appeal to visitors from around the world:

  • Salt
  • Addictive Seaweed Salt (やみつきのり塩)
  • Devil's Soy Butter (悪魔の醤油バター)
  • Garlic Storm (にんにく暴力)
  • Not Spicy Enough (Black Pepper)
  • Shinsekai Red Lantern Spice (Extra Hot)
  • Sinful Cheese (背徳チーズ)
  • Wasabi Flash (わさび一閃)
  • Sake Thief (Anchovy & Garlic)
  • Enchanting Cod Roe Mayo (魅惑のめんマヨ)
  • Midnight Honey Butter (深夜のハニーバター)
  • Theme Park Finish (Cinnamon Sugar & Butter)

Toppings can also be added — butter, cheese sauce, fried garlic, and honey — so guests can create their own original combination.

Meat Stick — Street Food Born from the Butcher Shop

The meat stick (肉棒) is a new, handheld street food item made with premium beef, developed specifically for Shinsekai's walking-around dining culture. Designed with international visitors in mind, the item is visually striking and easy to eat on the go.

Targeting Inbound Tourism and Osaka's Food Scene

Shinsekai draws tourists from around the world throughout the year. "Agiya Orosha Shibata" aims to be not just a place to eat, but a memorable stop on an Osaka trip. Plans include multilingual support (English, Chinese, Korean), collaborations with overseas influencers, tie-ups with sightseeing tours, coordination with the Osaka Tourism Bureau, and participation in overseas events — all to spread Osaka's fried food culture to the world.

A Revival Built on Community Support

The comeback from the fire was made possible by the community, customers, business partners, and crowdfunding supporters. In return, the team aims to energize the neighborhood, attract new visitors, and contribute to the local economy.
