The Sounkyo Lantern Fest is returning to Sounkyo Onsen in Hokkaido for another season of lantern-lit evenings, running every Saturday from June 6 through July 4, 2026.
This year's theme is "Night Market in the Gorge," with workshops, food and drink stalls, and goods vendors joining the signature lantern launch. The event is designed for families and groups alike, offering a variety of activities throughout the evening.
Event Highlights
- Lantern Launch – Attendees release wish-bearing lanterns into the night sky (distribution starts at 8:00 PM)
- Lucky Bingo Tournament – A bingo game with prizes, beginning at 7:30 PM
- Night Market – Food and goods stalls open from 4:00 PM
Special Hotel Plans
Guests staying at Choyotei or Choyo Resort Hotel can book a special plan that includes a color yukata rental for women and one hand lantern per room — extras that add to the enchanting atmosphere of the festival evening.

About the Lanterns
