Overview
Starting from a 16mm wide-angle end, the 16-50mm F2.8 covers a practical focal range from wide-angle to medium telephoto. That is equivalent to 24–75mm in 35mm format for the Sony E-mount, Nikon Z-mount, and Fujifilm X-mount versions, and 25.6–80mm for the Canon RF-mount version. It is suited to a wide variety of shooting, from sweeping landscapes and architecture to family photos and snapshots in tight indoor spaces.
The lens keeps a bright F2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range while measuring 79.6mm in length and weighing 305g, with a 55mm filter diameter (length and weight are for the Sony E-mount version). It is also sturdily built, making it a good match for a "leave-it-on" lens that can be carried around every day. The large F2.8 aperture produces soft bokeh and allows faster shutter speeds in dim places, so it can also serve as a first interchangeable lens.
For autofocus, the lens uses VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), a fast and precise linear motor focus mechanism that tracks moving subjects well, so it can keep up with the movements of children and pets. The minimum focusing distance at the wide-angle end is 0.15m, and getting close to a subject widens the range of expression. With these functions packed into a compact body, the lens is meant for both still images and video.
