RE BONSAI™ Pop-Up Program

  • Sale of RE BONSAI™ pieces, limited to 30 items
  • A workshop for making an original RE BONSAI™ (for details, contact info@toufu.tokyo)
  • TOUFU TOKYO apparel and goods for sale
  • Information on commissioned (custom) orders
  • Reception for an upcycle plan that turns a customer's own withered bonsai into a RE BONSAI™ piece

RE BONSAI™ is the work of TOUFU TOKYO artist Yoshio Suzuki, who takes bonsai that have withered, reached the end of their life, or would otherwise have been discarded, and gives them new form as contemporary art. Every part of each piece — trunk, branches, roots, leaves, and moss — uses real plant material, yet none of it needs watering, pruning, or any other upkeep. It marks a shift from bonsai that must be tended to bonsai that simply exist. The name "RE BONSAI™" combines "reborn" and "bonsai," carrying both the cycle of life and a fresh take on Japanese culture.

This is TOUFU TOKYO's fifth pop-up at Hankyu Men's Tokyo, and it arrives as interest in RE BONSAI™ keeps growing well beyond the art world, in Japan and internationally. To match that momentum, the pop-up expands this time to fill both POP-UP SPACE A and B on the store's 1st floor. Alongside a limited run of 30 stand and frame pieces on display and for sale, the event includes a workshop for making an original RE BONSAI™, apparel and goods from the TOUFU TOKYO brand, and information on special commissioned orders. RE BONSAI™ needs no upkeep and won't wither indoors, making it easy to bring into everyday life. Visitors can see the pieces up close, touch them, and even try making one — a hands-on chance to experience this upcycled bonsai art firsthand.

Artist Yoshio Suzuki

Born in 1978 and raised in Nishikasai, Tokyo, Yoshio Suzuki is the RE BONSAI™ artist who breathes new life into withered bonsai with a distinctive artistic sensibility. In 2021, as a tribute to the dignified forms and quiet elegance of bonsai and in the spirit of upcycling, he launched RE BONSAI™, built around the themes of "life and death" and "the passage of time." His work has included participation in the Disney© 100th Anniversary and Tokyo Disney Resort 40th Anniversary projects, and an invitation to the ceremony marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Japan, held at Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto. He is also active in media appearances, live performances, and workshops.

What Is RE BONSAI™?

A coined term combining "reborn" and "bonsai." As art that breathes new life into bonsai that have finished serving their purpose, the process carefully selects withered trunks and reconstructs them with branches and leaves given a proprietary drying treatment, carrying the original bonsai's spirit of innovation and challenge into a new bonsai aesthetic. Every piece uses real plant material, and the dynamic ridges and deep cracks etched into the trunk over time are left as bare wood, while newly added foliage brings a crisp, modern touch that elevates the space around it into an interior object. The pieces need no watering, sunlight, shading, pruning, or other maintenance, and since they use no soil, they fall outside plant quarantine regulations and can be taken abroad. They can also be displayed semi-permanently indoors, even without natural light.
