An official record video has been released for YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition KAGOSHIMA - Imagination of Japan -, which continues its run through Monday, August 31, 2026, at Reimeikan (Kagoshima Prefectural Center of History and Art), Special Exhibition Room 1.
The exhibition is the world's first immersive digital art museum where visitors can step into Japan's celebrated yokai art, including Hyakki Yagyo Emaki (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons), Hyakumonogatari (One Hundred Ghost Stories), oni (demons), tengu, kappa, and tsukumogami (spirit objects) painted by various artists during the Edo and Meiji periods, brought to life through cutting-edge video technology and three-dimensional sculpture.
Born from the rich imagination of ancient Japanese mythology and folklore, yokai have been loved by people around the world across generations. Using state-of-the-art digital technologies such as 3D CG, projection mapping, and holographic screens, the humorous figures found in yokai paintings and caricatures are brought dynamically to life, while three-dimensional sculptures recreate a realistic yokai world.
With cooperation from Nishio City Iwase Bunko, Japan's first rare book museum, and the Yokai Museum on Shodoshima, the exhibition also offers commentary on yokai culture, paintings, caricatures, and art, tracing the history of yokai and its connections to modern pop culture.
Having previously been held in Nagoya and Tokyo, the exhibition has now drawn more than 250,000 visitors and is making its first stop in Kyushu.
