Grand Hokkaido Fair Returns to Yokohama Takashimaya with Climate-Driven Spring Flavors

The 23rd Grand Hokkaido Fair (大北海道展) is set to take place at Yokohama Takashimaya's 8th-floor event hall over two weeks, from April 1 (Wednesday) to April 13 (Monday). Around 95 vendors from across Hokkaido will be represented, making it one of the largest Hokkaido fairs held anywhere in Japan.

Event Dates:

  • Week 1: April 1 (Wed) to April 7 (Tue)
  • Week 2: April 8 (Wed) to April 13 (Mon)

Hours: Open until 8:00 PM daily. April 7 (Tue) closes at 6:00 PM. The final day closes at 5:00 PM.

Note: Participating vendors vary by week.

This year's theme is "Next-Generation Flavors: Connecting Hokkaido's Evolving Deliciousness." Local Takashimaya buyers stationed in Hokkaido have curated the event to focus on three ingredients whose quality has improved significantly due to climate change and advances in farming: spring king crab (タラバカニ), asparagus (アスパラガス), and fully ripened strawberries (完熟いちご). Exclusive limited-edition dishes and sweets featuring these three ingredients will be available throughout the fair.

New Spring Hokkaido Flavors Shaped by Climate Change

Spring King Crab (春タラバ)

In the Nemuro region, which leads the province in crab catches, the traditional spring harvest had long centered on hairy crab (毛ガニ). In recent years, however, shifts in ocean currents have increased plankton—a key food source for crabs—making the area a prime habitat for king crab (タラバガニ), which can adapt to a wider range of water temperatures. The king crab catch in Nemuro has roughly tripled over the past three years, establishing spring king crab as one of the region's new seasonal offerings.

Asparagus (アスパラガス)

Hokkaido leads all of Japan in asparagus production. As temperatures in Hokkaido have been rising earlier in the spring season due to climate change, asparagus harvests are coming in sooner than before. Combined with advances in proprietary farming techniques, the quality of Hokkaido asparagus continues to improve—thick, sweet, and wonderfully crisp.

Fully Ripened Strawberries (完熟いちご)

While prefectures like Tochigi and Fukuoka are typically known for strawberry production, Hokkaido has been quietly improving its spring strawberry quality in recent years thanks to climate shifts and better cultivation techniques. By taking advantage of the cool Hokkaido climate, growers allow strawberries to ripen slowly at low temperatures over an extended period, resulting in a deep sweetness balanced by a refreshing acidity.
