Zenrin's Map Design GALLERY Releases 4th and Final Series of Japanese Inhabited Island Trading Cards

A new series of trading cards celebrating Japan's inhabited islands is heading to store shelves. Zenrin Co., Ltd., headquartered in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, is releasing the fourth installment of its Map Design GALLERY CARD/Inhabited Islands series on July 3, 2026 (Friday) at noon through the Map Design GALLERY online store, with physical store sales beginning the same day.

With this fourth release, the series now covers all 304 inhabited islands across Japan. A first-run limited card file set capable of holding all 304 island cards is also available, expanding the joy of collecting.

Map Design GALLERY CARD Series Overview

Trading Cards That Make You Want to Know More About Japan's Remote Islands

The Map Design GALLERY CARD/Inhabited Islands series features trading cards themed around Japan's inhabited islands. Since the first series launched in July 2025, it has attracted a wide audience including map enthusiasts and travel lovers, surpassing 180,000 cumulative cards sold as of the end of May 2026.

The front of each card is designed using Zenrin's proprietary map data, featuring the island's name, map, population, area, road layout, and building shapes — a visual that lets you imagine island life just by looking at it. The back features a silhouette that captures the island's unique shape and character. Comparing cards side by side allows you to imagine the lifestyle and features of each island. Series 4 adds 77 new islands to the lineup, completing all 304 inhabited islands.

Experience Japan's Unknown Islands Through Cards

Product planner Keisuke Takahashi shared his thoughts on the series completion:

The Inhabited Islands cards received an enthusiastic response from a wide range of people — map and travel enthusiasts, people with connections to remote islands, and educators. We are very pleased that with Series 4, we have been able to complete the Inhabited Islands series as planned and bring all 304 islands to the world. Series 4 is packed with the charm of remote islands across all 77 varieties — we hope you will aim to complete all 304 islands.

Takahashi's Recommended Card: Kuroshima (Okinawa Prefecture)

When first viewing the island's map and contour lines on the card, Takahashi was struck by how flat the terrain was, sparking his curiosity. Further research revealed that the island is known as the "island of cattle," with approximately 3,000 head of cattle — far outnumbering the island's human population. Sea turtles also come ashore to lay their eggs there. The island's beautiful sea, rich nature, and the lives of its inhabitants made it a place he hopes to visit someday.
