Craftspeople dye the cloud pattern, which expresses the theme of the 2026 fall/winter season, "Recollection" (想起), by hand, one piece at a time. The basic workwear-based shapes are combined with the texture of the sashiko fabric and the distinctive colors and patterns of suminagashi.
Kotsubu Sashiko, a Sashiko Fabric Used for Martial Arts Uniforms
Kotsubu Sashiko, the fabric used for these pieces, is a sashiko material originally made for martial arts uniforms. It is sturdy yet soft, and comfortable to wear. It is one of the basic fabrics in BLUE BLUE JAPAN's sashiko series, with the plump texture that is typical of sashiko.
Suminagashi, a Rare Dyeing Technique
The technique applied to this fabric is called suminagashi. Colors and patterns are drawn in a tank of water, and the fabric is laid on top to pick up the pattern. It has also been used for kimono and other traditional Japanese clothing. Because the result changes with the condition of the water surface and the movement of the colors, each piece of fabric patterned by hand by a craftsperson has a different look.
Layering the uneven texture of the sashiko fabric with the colors and patterns of suminagashi adds a handmade character to the basic workwear shapes.
