Space Concept
Wonderwall® designer Masamichi Katayama has overseen the interior design of Drawer Aoyama since the brand's debut in 2003.
For this renewal, marking 23 years since the store first opened, Katayama set the theme "Inheritance and Deepening." He views a space as something that matures as time accumulates within it. Rather than simply refreshing the store, this renewal was approached as an opportunity to revisit the value built up over the years and dig deeper into its essence.
The symmetrical order that ran through the 2003 design has been carried forward, while a new series of oval arches finished in gray plaster add depth and rhythm to the space. Each time a visitor passes through an arch, the view shifts gently, creating a sequence of new encounters with the products.
At the same time, elements that hold the store's memory — the drawer-style fixtures that symbolize the brand, the bare-bulb chandeliers that embody its cheap-chic sensibility, and the classic hanger racks — have deliberately been carried over unchanged. These are not simply existing fixtures; they represent the accumulated time of the brand itself.
The facade has also been given a round glass window, with a new counter in black marble serving as a fresh symbol. Rather than setting the existing identity against the new elements, the design reworks them into a relationship where each enhances the other, giving Drawer's philosophy of "inheriting quality" a more dimensional expression within the space.
Not change, but continued refinement. Not merely inheriting, but deepening value further.
As the memories built over 23 years quietly overlap with a new perspective for the times ahead, Drawer Aoyama has been reborn as a space that holds onto the brand's origins while wearing a new expression.
Comment From Wonderwall® Masamichi Katayama
"Drawer Aoyama has been a special place for me too — a place where time has accumulated together with the brand since its 2003 debut. For this renewal, I wanted to carry forward the memories and atmosphere nurtured over that time while quietly deepening the space into one befitting Drawer's future. I hope longtime visitors will feel the same sense of comfort as always, while first-time visitors discover something fresh.
The value of a physical store lies in the encounters with products and the experiences born in that place. As encounters between people and products, between people themselves, and with the space overlap, that time becomes part of the brand's memory. I aimed to create a place that serves as a vessel for that kind of rich experience."
