About the Performance

About Arida Kagura Troupe

The Arida Kagura Troupe's origins can be traced back to the late Sengoku period (late 16th century), as evidenced by ancient documents from the Inoue family, Shinto priests who served shrines in the southeastern part of Kitahiroshima Town. The troupe has traditionally performed about 20 different pieces, preserving classical repertoire. Three performances - "Kamioroshi" (Descending of the Gods), "Ama no Iwato" (The Heavenly Rock Cave), and "Yamata no Orochi" - were designated as Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Hiroshima Prefecture in April 1954.

Currently, troupe members range from their teens to their 80s, continuing a tradition that spans over 430 years as a Shinto ritual celebrating the autumn harvest and expressing gratitude to the deities.

Performance Program

(1) "Ebisu" - The Celebratory Dance

Ebisu Performance

In Mihonoseki in the land of Izumo, Kotoshironushi no Mikoto made his living by fishing. This deity is known as Ebisu, the only Japanese deity among the Seven Lucky Gods. In this performance, Ebisu travels to various places (following his heart's desire) to fish for sea bream at local festivals, wishing prosperity for the region. Though initially unsuccessful, he eventually scatters bait and triumphantly catches a magnificent sea bream.

This piece is often performed at celebratory occasions and festivals, representing the deity's distribution of various seeds of fortune and symbolizing future prosperity, success, and peaceful living.

(2) "Yamata no Orochi" - The Eight-Headed Serpent

Yamata no Orochi Performance

Susanoo no Mikoto, brother of Amaterasu Omikami, descended from Takamagahara to the land of Izumo and arrived at the upper reaches of the Hi River. There he found an elderly couple, Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi, lamenting with their daughter between them. When Mikoto inquired about their sorrow, they explained: "Of our eight daughters, seven have been taken by the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, and now the time has come for our last remaining daughter to be taken as well." They recounted the tragedy and, together with their last daughter Kushinadahime, pleaded for help.

Mikoto vowed to defeat the serpent. He had sake prepared - the serpent's favorite - and waited for its appearance. Eventually, the serpent arrived riding billowing clouds. After the serpent drank and became intoxicated, Mikoto defeated it and was united with Kushinadahime. This performance dramatizes the ancient story from the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters).
