Hotel New Grand Offers Early Summer Phoenix Afternoon Tea in a Historic Ballroom

Hotel New Grand (10 Yamashita-cho, Naka-ku, Yokohama) is offering a limited-run afternoon tea experience called the "Early Summer Phoenix Afternoon Tea" in the Phoenix Room on the 2nd floor of its main building. The event runs on five days only: April 30 (Thu), May 1 (Fri), May 3 (Sun), May 4 (Mon, public holiday), and May 6 (Wed, public holiday), 2026.

The menu draws on European traditions while incorporating seasonal early-summer ingredients. The tea stand holds a total of 12 items, including a melon shortcake, a richly flavored chocolate soufflé fromage, mango baba au rhum, and weekend citron among the sweets. Savory selections include a ratatouille with summer vegetables and polenta, a cucumber sandwich with dill, and edamame mousse with the hotel's traditional consommé jelly. Two scone flavors round out the offering. Before the tea stand is served, guests receive a welcome tea alongside a complimentary plate—banana trifle—from the pastry chef.

The Phoenix Room on the 2nd Floor of the Main Building

Phoenix Room (present day)

The Phoenix Room served as the hotel's main dining room when it opened in 1927 (Showa 2). Its design reflects traditional Japanese shrine and temple architecture—an intentional contrast chosen because the majority of guests at the time were foreign visitors. The space continues to be used as a banquet hall today, and stepping inside reveals elaborate ceiling decorations and a distinctive atmosphere rarely encountered elsewhere.

The room is not open to the general public on a regular basis, making this afternoon tea a rare opportunity to experience the historic space. Large windows look out onto the ginkgo tree-lined Yamashita Park Street, and guests can take in the fresh early-summer greenery while enjoying their tea.

The hotel's main building was designated a Yokohama Historic Building in 1992 and recognized as a Modern Industrial Heritage by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2007.
