Kamishichiken "Kotobukikai" — An Elegant Autumn Evening of Japanese Dance
The autumn dance performance by geiko and maiko of Kamishichiken — this is "Kotobukikai."
At the normally private Kamishichiken Kaburenjo theater, the gorgeous sounds of singing and shamisen will resonate, enveloping the stage in a quietly atmospheric ambiance.
"Kotobukikai" is a precious stage where geiko and maiko showcase the results of their daily training. From dance performances highlighting the fresh charm of younger performers to programs where seasoned expertise shines, this cross-generational stage weaving together inherited techniques and spirit receives favorable reviews from many visitors each year.
This year, we have prepared the following diverse program:
"Shitadashi Sanbaso"
The curtain opens with this auspicious dance celebrating peace and prosperity. Humor and formality blend exquisitely, spreading a celebratory atmosphere across the stage.
"Seigaiha"
Set to Kiyomoto melodies, this elegant scene flows like waves in graceful dance. The dignity and tranquility of classical tradition touch the heart deeply.
"Toge no Banzai"
This piece humorously depicts the scene of two banzai performers meeting at a mountain pass and reluctantly parting. Human emotion and laughter merge in this heartwarming work.
"Atama-yama"
A comic dance based on the rakugo story "Atama-yama." Cherry blossoms sprout from a man's head, eventually leading to hanami festivities — this fantastical tale is delivered through lively dance.
Even those experiencing Japanese dance for the first time can feel at ease.
The dance movements, music, costumes, and expressions communicate stories beyond words.
Another highlight is the venue itself, Kamishichiken Kaburenjo theater.
This atmospheric wooden building served as a location for a major hit film and offers a special space.
Step inside, and you'll be gently embraced by a serene and rich worldview different from everyday reality.
Please take your time to enjoy this autumn stage woven by the geiko and maiko of Kyoto's Kamishichiken.
