Facing the sea and crossed by the Tokaido — the highway linking Edo with Kyoto and Osaka — the Edo-period area that is now Minato City was home to people working in a wide range of occupations. Alongside fishermen, there were those who transported goods by boat and by ox, those who worked at the teahouses where travelers stopped to rest, and others who did business with samurai households.
This exhibition draws on ukiyo-e prints and historical documents depicting working people to introduce occupations connected to the sea, the Tokaido, and samurai residences. Visitors can explore jobs that still exist today, jobs that have changed over time, and jobs that have disappeared entirely.
