Tokyo-based contemporary ukiyo-e artist NAGA and Los Angeles streetwear brand Philip Lumbang are releasing their first-ever collaboration collection starting July 2026.
The collection features original graphics drawn by NAGA depicting a "skateboarding samurai" and "breakdancing townspeople," combining humor with an edgy sensibility. It brings together the traditional beauty of Japanese "wa" aesthetics with the street cultures of LA and Shibuya in a one-of-a-kind lineup.
Behind the Collaboration
The collaboration is driven by two strategic goals. The first is capturing demand from inbound tourism: a collection that fuses traditional Japanese culture with street culture makes a strong impression at select shops in trend-setting neighborhoods like Harajuku and Shibuya, appealing to visitors to Japan. The second is laying the groundwork for Philip Lumbang's global expansion — the brand plans to showcase the collection's originality at the "JUMBLE SEOUL" joint exhibition in South Korea this August, followed by "ComplexCon" in Las Vegas in October, one of the world's largest street culture events, as it accelerates its expansion from Japan and Asia to the rest of the world. The collaboration is not a one-off project either: NAGA and Philip Lumbang plan to continue releasing second and third rounds of designs, expanding the collection further.
Collection Theme: "From Los Angeles to Shibuya"
The collaboration expresses the fusion of Philip Lumbang's LA atmosphere with the Japanese street scenes of Shibuya depicted by NAGA. The graphics mix classic Japanese motifs — Mt. Fuji, folding fans, pine trees — with skateboarding, breakdancing, and graffiti art elements. Look out for playful details throughout, including an endearing hiragana rendering of "Philip Lumbang" worked into the artwork.
