A new collectible toy series that treats the runners of plastic model kits as manga panels is set to launch in December 2026. From Takara Tomy, "Placomic" (プラコミック) is based on the idea that the shape of a model kit runner (the frame-like section that connects the parts when plastic is molded) looks like the panel layout of a manga page.
The first lineup, featuring Detective Conan and Sanrio Characters, goes on sale on Saturday, December 26, 2026, at a suggested retail price of 1,628 yen (tax included) each. It will be sold at toy specialty stores, the toy sections of department stores and mass retailers, convenience stores, and some character shops nationwide, as well as at online stores and Takara Tomy's official shopping site, Takara Tomy Mall, among other outlets. The series will also roll out in turn to other parts of Asia, including South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Each item features semi-three-dimensional parts that look like a single scene cut out of a manga. Snap a part off the runner to collect your favorite characters and scenes, or attach the included ball chain to turn it into a comic-design charm. The comic-book-style package can also be displayed on a desk, bookshelf, or anywhere else you like. In short, the series can be enjoyed three ways: collect, display, and carry.
As ways of enjoying character content continue to diversify, Takara Tomy aims to offer a new combination of plastic models, manga, and characters, and to share its appeal in Japan and overseas. Collaborations with a variety of other characters are also planned, with the aim of building a series that many people can enjoy.
