Edo-Tokyo's Local Specialties and Seed Merchants — The Enomoto Tomekichi Shop and the Seed Merchant Road
In the farming villages surrounding Edo and Tokyo, one of Japan's great consumer cities, vegetable cultivation flourished by making use of local land conditions. From the final years of the Edo period through the 1930s and early 1940s, vegetable seed wholesalers gathered along the Nakasendo highway running through Itabashi, Takinogawa, and Sugamo, forming what came to be known as "Seed Merchant Street" (Taneya Kaido). The area grew into one of the country's largest hubs for the distribution of vegetable seeds from across Japan.
This exhibition centers on materials donated by the Enomoto Tomekichi Shop (now Tokyo Seed Co., Ltd.), a seed wholesaler that has operated near Sugamo Koshinzuka since the final years of the Edo period. It introduces the cultural heritage value of the Enomoto Tomekichi Shop building, which was designated a Toshima Ward Cultural Property in 2023 as the "Enomoto Family Shop-and-Residence and New Parlor," along with the role played by seed merchants who developed and sold numerous vegetable varieties and local specialties nationwide, and the history of the Seed Merchant Road.

During the exhibition period, curators will give talks highlighting the exhibition's key features, alongside a range of related programs including worksheets for summer vacation independent study projects, vegetable-themed workshops, and a stamp rally.
Comment from a Toshima Ward Curator
Ahead of the exhibition, a museum curator commented, "We are displaying around 200 items, including seed merchant tools, catalogs, and historical documents, as well as numerous vegetable seed samples. We hope that through the quiz rally and workshops, children and younger visitors will develop an interest in agriculture and the seed industry."
