A new window treatment collection has arrived that bridges Japanese tradition and European style. TUISS DÉCOR has launched "Karakami", a collection that reinterprets traditional Japanese karakami (唐紙) patterns through a contemporary, globally-minded design lens. The collection went on sale on April 9, 2026.
The Background: Demand for Japanese Design in Modern Interiors
In recent years, the Japanese interior market has seen increasing demand for styles that incorporate traditional Japanese design elements while still fitting seamlessly into modern homes. The boom in renovated kominka (traditional farmhouses) and Japanese-modern interiors, along with the growing interest in accommodations and commercial spaces that evoke a sense of "Japanese-ness," has created fertile ground for this kind of design crossover.
TUISS DÉCOR, a UK-born window treatment brand, has previously brought European design to Japanese homes through collaborations such as V&A's William Morris collection and the Liberty x Bridgerton (Netflix) collection. The new Karakami collection takes a different direction: a British brand reinterpreting Japan's traditional patterns through a global design sensibility.
The "Karakami" Collection
The collection features 8 patterns × 3 color variations, available across three product categories: roll screens, Roman shades, and curtains. All items are custom-made to millimeter-level precision.
The patterns draw from motifs that have been passed down through Japanese history since the Heian period, each carrying auspicious meaning:
| Pattern | Description | Color Variations |
|---|---|---|
| Kumo (Cloud) | Flowing cloud motifs evoking eternity and good fortune, once adorning Heian court robes. | Walnut / Peach / Chestnut |
| Matsu (Pine) | Symbol of longevity, constancy, and vitality — a classic auspicious motif. | Rain Sky / Budding / Morning Sky |
| Tori-musubi (Bird Knot) | Sparrow-inspired facing birds, symbolizing good relationships and household safety. | Madder Red / Sunlit / Ink Black |
| Ume (Plum) | Plum blossoms that herald spring after winter's cold — representing purity and nobility. | Peach / Crimson / Night Sky |
| Asanoha (Hemp Leaf) | Geometric hexagonal motif associated with a child's healthy growth. | Fresh Green / Maple / White Tea |
| Kiri (Paulownia) | Symbol of nobility; the leaves and blossoms of the sacred tree said to shelter the phoenix. | Hemp / Haze / Fair Weather |
| Nami (Wave) | Geometric wave pattern, also known as seigaiha, symbolizing prosperity and peace. | Early Summer / Night / Spring |
| Wachō (Japanese Butterfly) | Elegant butterfly motif arranged in circles, based on the traditional fusechō design. | Flax / Scarlet / Ecru |
