Aso Retreat HONO by Onko Chishin (HONO) opens on Monday, November 2, 2026, in Minami Aso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture. The hotel is produced by Onko Chishin Co., Ltd., a company that develops "destination hotels," lodgings that become the purpose of a trip. The General Manager is Nomiyama (野見山 開).
Foraging, the practice of entering Aso's fields to find, pick, and taste plants, sits at the core of the stay. Rather than simply looking at nature, guests touch, taste, and feel it, experiencing Aso with all five senses.
Why Aso? A Place Where Nature and People Coexist
Aso is home to one of the world's largest calderas. On the land created by volcanic activity, vast grasslands spread, abundant water is nurtured, and hot springs well up. Yet the landscape was not made by nature alone. On the grasslands, people have long carried out practices that shape the land, such as controlled burning, grazing, and grass cutting.
HONO does not aim for a stay in which guests merely look at and enjoy nature. Guests walk into the fields, touch the plants, and taste what the land has produced. Because Aso is a place where nature and people have built up time together, the hotel wants guests to step into that relationship and spend time getting to know the land more deeply.
Rather than keeping the experience within the hotel, HONO connects guests with local people, producers, and the culture and wisdom handed down in the area, so that they can experience Aso itself through their stay.

Experiencing Aso With the Five Senses
HONO builds points of contact with Aso into many moments of the stay, from touching plants and tasting the land's bounty to soaking in hot springs and encountering local materials and handcrafts. Here are the six ways to stay at HONO.
01 | Foraging
Find, touch, and smell plants, starting from the "Edible Garden"
Next to the restaurant, the Edible Garden grows plants centered on native Japanese species. The garden design is supervised by the Japan Grass and Tree Research Institute, which studies plants from across Japan and explores their potential. Green Elm in Oita Prefecture, a company with long experience raising native Japanese plants and creating forests, handles seedling procurement, construction, and maintenance.
Guests can walk through the garden, touching the plants that grow in the season and checking their scents. Which plants guests encounter changes with the season, which is part of the garden's appeal. The stay at HONO begins with touching plants with one's own senses, not just looking at them.
- Location: The Edible Garden (Edible Garden, Edible Mountain)
- Experience: Foraging tour

02 | Primitive Gastronomy
From Aso to the sea of Kumamoto, tasting the land by following the flow of water
Rain that falls on Aso's land seeps underground and emerges as spring water. It becomes rivers that water the villages and flows into the sea of Kumamoto. At the hotel's restaurant, ASATO (阿然人), inspired by this flow of water, "Primitive Gastronomy" traces ingredients from Aso to the sea of Kumamoto.
Head Chef Yamato Imanishi reflects in his dishes the scenery from the mountains of Aso, through the villages with their fields and rice paddies, to the sea of Kumamoto beyond. Spring water that staff collect from the source every morning is used in the cooking, and cooking over fire such as firewood is incorporated, depicting a landscape that shifts from mountains to villages to the sea within the course.
- Location: Restaurant ASATO (阿然人)
- Experience: Dinner and breakfast

03 | Guest Rooms
17 rooms, all with private hot springs, overlooking Aso's five peaks
HONO has 17 guest rooms. Every room has a private hot spring, and large windows open onto the mountain range of Aso's five peaks. There are six room types, ranging from 65 m² to 168 m², and some rooms also have a sauna and a cold plunge.
The room signs use Kutami shibu-uchiwa fans (来民渋うちわ), handed down for more than 400 years in Yamaga, Kumamoto, and Nankan stone (南関石), born from the pyroclastic flow of a large-scale eruption of Aso. Each of the 17 rooms has a different design based on the motif of Aso's nature and its relationship with people.
The minibar is stocked with items that convey a connection to the land. Drinks and snacks chosen mainly from Aso and Kumamoto include tea from the Japan Grass and Tree Research Institute, drinking yogurt and Aso Milk Ice Cream from Abe Bokujo (阿部牧場), Minami Aso Beer, and akaushi jerky.
- Number of rooms: 17 rooms in 6 types
- Size: 65 m² to 168 m²
- Facilities: Private hot spring in every room, sauna and cold plunge in some rooms

Superior Room
04 | Hot Springs
Soaking in hot water and wind while looking at Aso's five peaks, unwinding in your own room
All 17 rooms have a private hot spring supplied with water from the 午王谷温泉 hot spring in Minami Aso. The water is a simple hot spring that is hypotonic and weakly alkaline. Guests can soak as many times as they like, at any time during their stay.
Some rooms also have a private sauna and cold plunge. Guests warm the body in the sauna, enter the cold plunge, and then soak in the hot spring. In between, they can feel the wind coming down from the mountains while looking at Aso's five peaks. Moving between hot water, heat, water, and wind, they can spend time turning their attention to the sensations of the body.
- Hot spring: 午王谷温泉
- Water quality: Simple hot spring (hypotonic, weakly alkaline, low-temperature)
- Facilities: Private hot spring in all 17 rooms, sauna and cold plunge in some rooms

05 | Spa
Bringing the nature of Aso to the body, "CONTINUUM SPA RITUAL"
The in-room spa "CONTINUUM" turns a guest room into a private spa space. This spa ritual lets guests feel, through temperature, scent, and touch, the nature of Aso that they have encountered during the stay, starting with foraging.
Treatments incorporate materials from the land, including Aso lava stones, Oguni cedar, herb balls wrapped with Aso plants, and Aso water. With techniques suited to the condition of the body that day, the spa offers time to feel the temperature, scent, and texture of nature.
Treatments take place in guest rooms overlooking Aso's five peaks, rather than in a separate spa facility. Without breaking the lingering feeling of the stay, guests quietly return their attention to their own senses.
- Style: In-room spa, reservation only
- Materials used: Aso lava stones, Oguni cedar, Aso plants, Aso water, and more

06 | Art and Interiors
Bringing the natural materials and handcrafts of Aso and Kumamoto into the stay
In shaping the hotel's spaces, the emphasis was not simply on adopting regional natural materials and traditional crafts, but on creating new expressions together with artisans and makers, so that the whole space conveys the appeal of the land of Aso and Kumamoto.
The lobby uses natural materials of the area, including thatch (kaya) growing on Aso's grasslands, Oguni cedar, and Oguni soil. Original interiors and fixtures were developed from scratch together with a thatching craftsman, bringing techniques handed down over generations into a contemporary space.

The guest room fabrics are dyed with bengara made from Aso ocher. Aso's bengara, which was once used but had almost stopped being produced, was revived with the opening of HONO. An original large tapestry dyed with the same bengara also hangs in the open-ceiling corridor.
Artists and craftspeople based mainly in Kumamoto and Kyushu were also commissioned to create artwork for HONO. Each of the 17 rooms has a different piece, themed on Aso's nature, culture, and the stories handed down on the land.
By layering the sensibilities of today's makers onto materials and techniques rooted in the land, the hotel aims to create spaces where the nature and culture of Aso and Kumamoto can be felt in many moments of the stay.

Opening the Senses and Returning to Your Own: Aiming for the "Restoration of Humanity"
HONO aims for a stay in which guests do not merely receive a service but use their own five senses to engage with the land and nature.
Keeping some distance from everyday life, guests turn their attention to the nature in front of them and the sensations of the body. By accumulating time spent seeing, touching, smelling, tasting, and feeling for themselves, they awaken the senses they originally have. Through such stays, HONO hopes to offer time that leads to the "restoration of humanity."

Comment From General Manager Nomiyama (野見山 開)
Since coming to Aso and encountering its nature and people, what I have felt is that people and nature here are not separated. The present landscape has been shaped over a long time through their involvement with each other.
At HONO, too, I would like guests to touch this land using their own senses, not only by looking at the scenery of Aso but by touching the plants, tasting the products of the land, and soaking in the hot springs. I hope that when guests finish their stay, they will feel Aso a little closer, and that it will also be a time to turn their attention to their own senses once again.
Together with everyone connected to this land, we will carry the appeal of Aso carefully through HONO.
