Hotel New Otani Makuhari Offers Special Golden Ehomaki with Saffron Rice for Setsubun

Hotel New Otani Makuhari introduces two special ehomaki varieties at Japanese restaurant Senbazuru, available for a limited three-day period from February 1-3, 2026.

Ehomaki is a traditional Japanese rolled sushi enjoyed during Setsubun, the day before the start of spring in the Japanese calendar. The custom involves eating the roll in silence while facing the year's lucky direction to invite good fortune and health.

This Year's Lucky Direction: South-Southeast

The lucky direction, or "eho," represents where Toshitokujin, the deity of good fortune, resides for that particular year. According to Japanese tradition, activities performed while facing this direction are believed to bring good luck.

For Setsubun 2026, the lucky direction is south-southeast. Hotel New Otani Makuhari offers specially crafted ehomaki filled with auspicious ingredients to celebrate this tradition.

Kinsei Ehomaki

Kinsei "Ehomaki" - ¥7,000

This premium ehomaki features golden saffron rice, creating a vibrant appearance perfect for Setsubun celebrations. The roll contains seven carefully selected ingredients honoring the Seven Deities of Good Fortune:

  • Conger eel (anago)
  • Salmon roe (ikura) marinated in soy sauce
  • Japanese omelet (tamagoyaki)
  • Cucumber
  • Dried gourd strips (kanpyo)
  • Crab stick
  • Shrimp floss (ebi oboro)
  • Aromatic nori seaweed
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Saffron vinegar rice

The generous-sized roll showcases fatty, high-quality conger eel and salmon roe among the seven luxurious ingredients wrapped in golden saffron rice.

Isshin Ehomaki

Isshin "Ehomaki" - ¥3,000

This traditional-style ehomaki is hand-rolled with care by Japanese cuisine artisans. Despite being a classic variation, it contains carefully prepared ingredients:

  • Shrimp
  • Shrimp floss (ebi oboro)
  • Cucumber
  • Dried gourd strips (kanpyo)
  • Shiitake mushrooms
  • Japanese omelet (tamagoyaki)

The roll features plump shrimp, deeply flavored shiitake mushrooms slow-simmered to perfection, and gently sweet Japanese omelet, allowing guests to fully appreciate each ingredient's authentic taste.
