Experience a New Type of Strawberry Picking at Kanto's Largest Rose Theme Park - Strawberry Hunt in the Land of Oz with Rainbow Theme

Keisei Rose Garden in Yachiyo City, Chiba Prefecture, announces the return of its limited-time strawberry picking facility "Strawberry Hunt in the Land of Oz" from January 17 (Saturday) to April 30 (Thursday), 2026. This year's theme is "Rainbow," featuring a giant rainbow installation in the decorative space and the debut of an interactive dessert experience called "Freshly Picked Strawberry and Rainbow Cake."

Decorative Strawberry Picking Under a Rainbow

One of the event's unique features is the colorful presentation of the strawberry picking space. While traditional strawberry picking typically involves limited colors - the red of strawberries, green of leaves, and white of the greenhouse - this event incorporates a vibrant "Rainbow" theme that complements the world of "The Wizard of Oz." A giant rainbow ornament, approximately 6 meters wide, spans across the strawberry lanes. Guests can pass under the rainbow and enjoy an extraordinary strawberry picking experience in a decorative space found only at this garden.

Entertainment-Focused Experience with Strawberry Hunter Guides

As a rose theme park that aims to evolve from a rose botanical garden, Keisei Rose Garden offers strawberry picking with rich entertainment value. Professional actors from theater companies serve as exclusive strawberry picking guides called "Strawberry Hunters," leading guests on an exploration tour-style experience while immersing them in the world of "The Wizard of Oz." The engaging interactions between the 1.8-meter giant puppet "Gatekeeper of Oz," "Dorothy" appearing via telephone, and the "Strawberry Hunter" guide further expand the story's atmosphere.

New Interactive Dessert: Freshly Picked Strawberry and Rainbow Cake

The "Rosaceae fruit strawberries" grown by rose cultivation professionals have attracted many repeat visitors each year due to their high quality. This winter, under the "Rainbow" theme, local popular cake shop "Sweets Alyssum" has developed an exclusive "Freshly Picked Strawberry and Rainbow Cake" specifically for this event. This dessert features abundant strawberries harvested at the garden, combined with rich vanilla-flavored Bavarian cream containing sweet and sour strawberry jam and jelly, wrapped in fluffy sponge cake resembling "clouds." Rainbow meringue is provided for topping. Guests can decorate freely with harvested "Oz Strawberries" and "Rainbow Meringue" to create their own unique sweets.

Four Varieties of "Oz Strawberries" Grown by Rose Cultivation Professionals

Rose cultivation professionals have selected four varieties for this year's "Oz Strawberries": "Berry Pop Suzu," "Koiminori," "Yotsuboshi," and "Benihoppe." Rose experts who have been involved in developing new rose varieties for many years have carefully cultivated these "Rosaceae fruit strawberries."

① Berry Pop Suzu

Strawberries with firm flesh and rich sweetness.

② Koiminori

Features good fragrance and mild acidity. Large with a rounded shape, with white flesh throughout.

③ Yotsuboshi

A four-star delicious strawberry with perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and flavor. The glossy fruit has high sugar content with moderate acidity for a rich taste.

④ Benihoppe

An exemplary strawberry in both color and shape. Well-balanced sweetness and acidity make it delicious enough to make your cheeks drop.

Rosaceae Fruit Strawberries Grown by Rose Experts

Rose expert tending to strawberry plants

Currently, there are numerous varieties of roses worldwide. Japan is particularly active in developing new rose varieties, producing many new breeds. Among Japanese rose gardens, Keisei Rose Garden consistently releases new rose varieties each year.

Shunsuke Takeuchi, who worked as a breeder at Keisei Rose Garden for 30 years, is a breeding specialist who won the Gold Award at the international new rose variety presentation "Rome Rose International Competition" in 2010. He is the second Japanese person to receive this honor, following Shozo Suzuki, the garden's first breeder and a leading figure in the rose industry.

Shunsuke Takeuchi Profile

The third-generation breeder at Keisei Rose Garden following Shozo Suzuki, he serves as director of both the Rose Garden and the strawberry garden. He specializes in creating fragrant floribunda roses, particularly varieties with excellent fragrance and continuous blooming characteristics, as well as compact varieties. He is known for discussing breeding theory.

His first variety involving both "crossing" and "selection" was "Kaoruno." The name "Kaoruno" reflects its fragrant aroma and beautiful flower form. With fluffy cup-shaped blooms that fade from soft apricot to pale tones, the transparent and delicate petals and fragrance possess unique presence. The variety won the Gold Award in the fragrance category at the 2005 JRC. He has created approximately 80 rose varieties to date, including "Kaoruno."

Organic and Sustainable Approaches with Little Farmers

While many strawberry greenhouses use pollinating bees, some facilities use the invasive species Western bumblebee, which cannot be released outside the greenhouse after the season and may be culled. However, Keisei Rose Garden adopts sustainable pollination methods that minimize environmental impact while respecting natural characteristics.

Hirozukin flies used for pollination, also used in medical applications, consume only nectar during their 10-day to 2-week lifespan, dedicating their entire lives to pollination work. Since they live inside greenhouses, they are attracting attention as a clean pollination method. Furthermore, strawberries pollinated by Hirozukin flies have the advantage of fewer deformities compared to those pollinated by bees.
