Kyodo Nyugyo Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Seiya Fukamatsu) will release "Meito x Nippon Yell Ibaraki Melon Latte" at FamilyMart stores nationwide (excluding southern Kyushu and Okinawa regions) starting Tuesday, January 27th.
The newly launched "Meito x Nippon Yell Ibaraki Melon Latte" is a collaboration product developed through a three-way partnership between FamilyMart, JA Zen-Noh (National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations), and Kyodo Nyugyo. It's a new addition to the Nippon Yell brand, which supports Japanese-produced foods.
Supporting Producers and Reducing Food Loss
The product is based on two core concepts: "safety and security" through the use of domestically produced fruits, and "food loss reduction" through connections with producers and agricultural cooperatives. Fruit cultivation is significantly affected by weather conditions including temperature, rainfall, and sunlight. In recent years, localized heavy rains, sudden gusts, hail, and abnormal summer heat have resulted in fruits that cannot be shipped to market, leading to food loss that can burden fruit farmers. By actively using fruits that don't make it to the market, this initiative contributes to supporting producers and reducing food waste.
About Andes Melon from Ibaraki
The product uses Andes melon juice from Ibaraki Prefecture, creating a dairy beverage with a pleasant, gentle sweetness. Andes melon is a variety developed in 1977, with its name derived from "safe to grow," "safe to sell," and "safe to buy." Originally planned to be sold as "Anshin desu Melon" (It's Safe Melon), the name was changed to "Andes Melon" by removing "shin" (core) since melons are eaten after removing their core.
The cultivation area for Ibaraki melons has been declining year by year due to factors such as quality variations caused by winter cold and summer heat, theft near harvest time, and an increasing number of farmers switching to vegetable cultivation. This product offers a chance to experience the gentle sweetness of Ibaraki-grown melons combined with quality dairy ingredients.
