Nakao Seigetsudo, a Japanese confectionery shop founded in the early Meiji era in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, is holding its "Nakao Seigetsudo Autumn Chestnut Festival" starting Saturday, September 12, 2026. Seasonal chestnut treats, sold one after another at each store, celebrate autumn's signature ingredient.
The lineup features four products, each showcasing chestnuts in a different way — from the perennially popular Chestnut Daifuku to Chestnut Dorayaki, Chestnut Monaka and Chestnut Okowa (chestnut sticky rice) — offering the flavor of chestnut from everyday snacking to the dinner table.
From Summer Fruit to Autumn Chestnuts
Nakao Seigetsudo runs a "Seasonal Daifuku" series that lets customers enjoy ingredients unique to each time of year.
From the spring "Amaou Strawberry Daifuku" to the "Summer Strawberry Daifuku" in July and the "Three Shine Muscat Daifuku" in August, each has sold more than 26,000 pieces in a single month, earning popularity as a way to taste the best of every season.
Now, as autumn arrives, the seasonal baton passes to chestnuts, a favorite among many customers every year.
From the juicy fruits of summer to the fluffy, hearty harvest of autumn — as the seasons change, so does the flavor of what's in season.
More Than Just Daifuku — The Four Flavors of the Autumn Chestnut Festival
This autumn, Nakao Seigetsudo is holding its Autumn Chestnut Festival, offering the taste of chestnuts in a variety of forms that can only be enjoyed at this time of year.
Along with the popular Chestnut Daifuku, which returns every autumn, Chestnut Dorayaki, Chestnut Okowa and Chestnut Monaka are also back again this year.
From a treat for tea time to a small gift or a dish for the autumn table, here are the four flavors on offer.
1. Chestnut Daifuku — On sale from Saturday, September 12
Made with two or more carefully selected chestnuts, the daifuku uses raw chestnuts harvested fresh each year, boiled in-house to bring out the natural aroma and flavor of Japanese chestnuts. The outer mochi is made with habutae mochi flour from Toyama Prefecture, giving it a soft, fluffy texture that melts in the mouth.
Inside is a house-made filling blending white azuki and red azuki beans from Hokkaido, delivering a light yet rich sweetness. The soft habutae mochi, smooth house-made filling and mellow sweetness of the chestnuts combine for a flavor unique to this season.
This year, the packaging has also been renewed with a new design featuring brush-lettering.

2. Chestnut Dorayaki — On sale from Saturday, September 12
This autumn-only item pairs the shop's signature dorayaki with a whole house-prepared chestnut.
The shop's prized dorayaki pancakes, baked moist and fragrant, are filled with house-made chunky red bean paste and a large chestnut.
Each bite delivers the gentle sweetness of the chunky bean paste alongside the rich flavor of the chestnut.

3. Chestnut Monaka — On sale from Friday, September 18
Chestnut Monaka packs a generous helping of chestnut-flavored bean paste inside an adorable chestnut-shaped monaka wafer shell. With a shelf life of about 10 days, it's well suited not only for everyday tea time but also as an autumn gift or present.

4. Chestnut Okowa — On sale from Friday, September 18
Beyond sweets, Chestnut Okowa lets diners enjoy chestnuts at the autumn table. This popular seasonal item, well received every year, returns again this year.
Chewy Shin-Taisho glutinous rice grown in Toyama Prefecture is combined generously with large chestnuts and lightly seasoned with salt. The natural sweetness of the chestnuts harmonizes with the rice's savory flavor for a dish that only a wagashi shop could create — equally suited to everyday meals, gifts and celebratory occasions.
