Takano Fruit Parlor Marks 100th Anniversary With a New Mask Melon Cream Soda

Takano Fruit Parlor is putting the mask melon front and center in a new drink: from October 1, all Takano Fruit Parlor locations will serve a Mask Melon Cream Soda.

To mark the brand's 100th anniversary, the shop built a drink around the mask melon, the fruit that has long represented Shinjuku Takano.

Smooth, cream-colored flesh, a rich aroma, and a juicy bite have made the mask melon a fruit closely associated with Shinjuku Takano for years. Wanting guests to enjoy its appeal in a new format, the shop created this cream soda.

The glass holds melon flesh along with cubes of frozen mask melon juice, combined with soda and melon syrup. Along with a light, bubbly fizz, the aroma and flavor of the mask melon spreads through each sip.

For the topping, the shop chose soft-serve rather than the vanilla ice cream more commonly used in cream sodas.

As the smooth soft-serve gradually melts into the soda, the drink keeps its refreshing character at first, then slowly turns creamier.

The fruitiness of the mask melon, the crispness of the soda, and the mellowness of the soft-serve come together, so the drink's character shifts a little with every sip.

Revisiting what makes both the mask melon and soft-serve appealing, Takano Fruit Parlor designed the drink as a fitting item for its 100th-anniversary milestone.
