Tokyo Dome Hotel Hosts Summer Cake-Making Class for Kids — Learn to Bake and Upcycle with a Professional Pastry Chef

Tokyo Dome Hotel (Koraku, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo) is hosting a two-day "Parent and Child Cake-Making Class" for elementary school students on August 12 (Wednesday) and 13 (Thursday), 2026. Guided by the hotel's Chef de Pâtissier, participants will bake and decorate a full fruit shortcake from scratch — all while dressed in a proper chef's coat and toque.

What Happens at the Class

The instructor is Chef de Pâtissier Kenji Nagashima, who oversees all of the hotel's pastry and sweet offerings. Children attend in a cook's coat and chef's hat, then work through the core techniques step by step: mixing and baking the sponge, and decorating the finished cake.

The class also includes a creative twist on food waste reduction. The scraps trimmed from the baked sponge — normally discarded — are transformed by the chef into a stylish glass cake, which participants enjoy with a drink during an afternoon tea break. This hands-on introduction to upcycling is framed as a fun, relatable way to experience everyday sustainability.

The finished whole cake (4号) goes home with the child. At the close of the event, every participant receives a "Kids Chef Certificate."

Parents accompanying their children are welcome to photograph and enjoy the experience alongside them. The hotel describes the class as well-suited for summer vacation free-research projects and family memory-making.

About Chef de Pâtissier Kenji Nagashima

With the motto of bringing "a sense of happiness" to every guest, Kenji Nagashima crafts sweets that linger in memory — paying close attention to the provenance and seasonality of ingredients. At Tokyo Dome Hotel, he oversees the full pastry operation, from custom whole cakes to seasonal menus.

For this class, Nagashima hopes to convey the appeal and joy of the pâtissier's craft directly to children through the experience of making a cake together.
