Tokyo Revue 2026 "Haru no Odori (Spring Dance)" to Be Held at Asakusa Hanagekijo on March 27-28

Tokyo Revue 2026's Haru no Odori (Spring Dance) will be staged at Asakusa Hanagekijo (2-28-1 Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo) on March 27 (Friday) and March 28 (Saturday), 2026.

The show is directed, choreographed, and performed by Tamari Haruna, one of the last remaining members of SKD Shochiku Kagekidan. The program spans 60 minutes without intermission, featuring a wide range of numbers — from classic tailcoat revue pieces and boldly arranged Japanese dance numbers, to refined tap dance, contemporary dance, and the signature line dance known for its speed, height, footwork, and formation excellence. With jazz, classical, and popular music woven throughout, the show is designed to entertain audiences of all backgrounds.

What Makes Tokyo Revue Special

A diverse mix of dance styles and music

From nihon buyo (traditional Japanese dance) and jazz dance, to ballet, tap dance, tango, and Latin, the program ranges from nostalgic Astaire-Rogers-style pair dancing to laugh-out-loud surreal contemporary pieces. The 60-minute show is unified by a "revue dance" sensibility that forms the distinctive flavor of Tokyo Revue.

The pleasure of watching individual dancers

Tokyo Revue is a show where dancers take center stage. The lead dancer shifts with each number, and the same performer reappears in completely different characters. Audiences often find themselves squinting to confirm "wait, is that really the same person from before?" before the next piece begins.

Powerful ensemble dancing

Around 20 dancers perform ensemble numbers — including Japanese-style full-cast pieces and musical-style numbers — all viewed up close. The highlight is the line dance: members work on it regularly, honing fast and high leg lifts and complex footwork. Each performance features new steps and formations choreographed by current member Sayaka Ori.

Direction and choreography by Tamari Haruna

Tamari Haruna, who handles the overall direction, choreography, and performing, was the youngest cast member in SKD Shochiku Kagekidan's final production. While honoring revue traditions, she draws on broad experience in musical choreography and jazz dance instruction to deliver bold, creative staging — one of Tokyo Revue's defining strengths.

In the autumn 2025 production "Aki no Odori (Autumn Dance)," Tamari collaborated with veteran SKD-trained choreographer Teruko Fujishiro to transform Verdi's opera "Un ballo in maschera" into a hauntingly elegant Japanese dance number in the style of Edogawa Ranpo, surprising audiences. For "Haru no Odori (Spring Dance)," the Japanese-style numbers are said to depict the chic world of Edo, while the Western-style numbers will feature spring flowers and insects — giving audiences plenty to look forward to.

About Tokyo Revue

When SKD Shochiku Kagekidan — which had been based at the Kokusai Gekijo in Asakusa and enjoyed nationwide popularity — ceased its revue productions in 1990 and pivoted to become a musical troupe, four of its leading members formed STAS, vowing to "keep the revue flame alive." For over 30 years, STAS continued presenting revue productions. In 2024, Tamari Haruna, who had served as the troupe leader in the later years of STAS, took over the baton and relaunched as Tokyo Revue. With the motto of "tradition and innovation" and the vision of "a revue where dancers take center stage," the company is working toward a 100th anniversary commemorative production for SKD in autumn 2028.
